Good news for any drivers of an electric car...

This is why it’s so important to always check tide times before walking along the coastline. Our guests can can check tide times in the information folder before going out so should never need the service of the RNLI.

Whitby RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was launched yesterday to rescue a family trapped by the tide.

The family of five and their dog got cut off by the tide on the beach between Whitby and Saltwick Nab, an area below the cliffs with no other exit routes.

The family alerted the Coastguard who launched their crews to search the area and Whitby’s inshore lifeboat was launched from the station.

The family were quickly located and all five members and their dog were taken to safety by RNLI volunteers in the lifeboat. The crew did two trips first with the children and then returned for the adults and dog.

They were brought to the station where along with the coastguard, the crew checked them over and gave them advice about the tides.

Lifeboat Operations Manager At Whitby Barry Brown said: ‘I have spoken to the family who were extremely grateful for the rescue and couldn’t believe they had been caught out by the tides after thinking they had taken all the necessary precautions. It just goes to show even experienced walkers can by caught out by a fast incoming tide. We would recommend to everyone to check the tide times and give yourselves plenty of time to reach your destination. Always carry a means of calling for help.’
