When is the best time to visit Whitby ? In my opinion ANYTIME 😜❤️❤️❤️

Why October is one of the best months for a Whitby break 🎃🌙

There is something about Whitby in October that feels completely different.

The darker evenings, autumn skies and Gothic skyline seem to suit the town perfectly, and as Halloween approaches, Whitby really comes into its own.

One of the biggest draws is Whitby Goth Weekend, when the town fills with incredible fashion, live music, alternative markets and visitors from across the country.

Then there is Illuminated Whitby Abbey, when the famous ruins are transformed after dark with dramatic lighting, creating one of the most atmospheric sights on the Yorkshire Coast.

Around town, many shops, pubs and businesses get into the spirit too, with Halloween-themed windows, decorations and displays adding to the atmosphere.

Of course, Whitby’s connection with Dracula makes October especially fitting. Bram Stoker was inspired by the town while writing his famous novel, and many of the places linked to the story can still be explored today.

But Whitby’s darker reputation goes far beyond Dracula. The town is filled with old myths, strange legends, ghost stories and buildings said to be haunted, from ancient streets and churchyards to centuries-old inns.

Add crisp coastal walks, quieter beaches, cosy pubs and fish and chips after dark, and October starts to make a very strong case for being one of the best times of year to visit Whitby.

The horned, fearsome figures of winter folklore will take over the streets for a weekend of costumed processions, drumming and dark festive fun.

Step aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway after dark… if you dare! 👻🚂

Mad Alice’s Ghost Train is returning to the North York Moors this Halloween… and there are just three nights to brave it.

As darkness falls, passengers step aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for an eerie journey through the night with lantern-lit carriages, costumed storytellers, live theatrical entertainment, and chilling tales inspired by ghosts, folklore, and the supernatural.

Leading the way is Mad Alice, named after one of York’s most infamous ghosts, bringing a suitably Gothic atmosphere to the railway after dark.

The Ghost Train runs on:

🎃 Sunday 18 October
👻 Sunday 25 October
🕯️ Sunday 1 November

Two services depart each evening at 6.15pm and 8pm. Each journey lasts around one hour. The experience is aimed at adults and older teenagers, with a minimum age of 14.

For those needing something to steady their nerves, selected tickets also include a complimentary York Gin drink.

Tickets can now be booked in advance via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway website. With only six Ghost Train journeys this Halloween, spaces may disappear quickly… 👻🚂
