Interesting facts about Whitby!!!

Whitby, Yorkshire, England, 1915.

The earliest known permanent settlement dates back to 656 AD, when it was called Streanæshealh and became the site where Oswy, the Christian king of Northumbria, established the first abbey under Abbess Hilda.

The Synod of Whitby took place there in 664 AD, and in 867 AD, Viking raiders destroyed the monastery. (Credit unknown)

So today is the last day of the Whitby Arch or whale bones as we know them as!!

This was the third actual set of whale bones:
1853
1963
2003

So in your life time you’ve definitely seen at least one set (if you’ve visited our gorgeous town that is!)

So we felt it only fit to go and say goodbye, they will not be getting replaced like for like.

But the history will go on.
