What a lovely month May has been here at Maesgwynne ☀️
We've enjoyed plenty of sunshine, some amazing sunsets, wonderful guests making special memories and lots of wildlife around the estate. From birdsong in the woodland to peaceful evenings overlooking the lake, it's been a beautiful start to the season. 🌅🐦

🦉 A very special wildlife story at Maesgwynne 🦉
9 days ago on Sunday evening we were alerted by guests that there was an owl stuck in a tree down by the lake.
When Alex & Jess went to investigate, what first appeared to be one owl turned out to be two.
Both tawny owls had become tangled in fishing line - a very sad sight. After around three hours, and with the help of a boat on the lake, Alex managed to carefully free them both.

Following advice from an experienced bird of prey rescue, the owls rested in a crate in an outbuilding for six days, where they were kept quiet, safe, and fed by us while they recovered and began to mend.
They continued to grow stronger and showed clear signs that they were ready to be free. At this point, we transferred both owls to our potting shed, well away from people, with a few small gaps in the roof so that, when ready, they could leave on their own.

We were so happy when we went to feed them today and both owls are nowhere to be seen, they have returned to the wild where they belong 🌳

We’d also like to gently remind anyone fishing at the lake to please let us know if fishing line becomes caught in branches or around the water’s edge. The outcome for these beautiful owls could have been much worse.

Alex & Jess have been busy this week installing new stiles down by the lake on the public footpath 🛠️
The route from the lake back up to the cottages is now clear - a lovely little walk with woodland views and plenty of fresh air 🌳
