in History, 2019. I was just looking through my photos for shop renovation photos but instead found these which I think are hilarious. My attempt at a photo shoot with my neighbour's cat. As you can see, she wasn't having any of it. (Last photo is my favourite). The book is the first of a super series for young readers moving on from beginner books but not ready for longer chapter books, by Paula Harrison & illustrated by Jenny Lovlie.

My contender for Niche Book of the Day - "Streets, Roads and Pavements" by H Gilbert Wyatt (2nd edition, 1928).

Intended for use by borough engineers and county or rural surveyors, as well as "those members of local authorities who sit upon the committees responsible for the upkeep of the highways."

I'm thinking of sending it to Oxfordshire County Council.... there's a stretch of road near Chipping Norton which was resurfaced in May/June and is now in much worse condition than it was previously ! 🤣

Just lots and lots of lovely, warm, friendly "best bookshop I've ever been in" type comments from visitors today. Really, really lovely.

I only gritted my teeth a little bit with the "I never know what your opening hours are" passive aggressive tone....😂😂 (*see front door / website / google maps for extra days etc) 🙄, or just ask me to write them down - I'm always happy to!

Which reminds me to remind you that the bookshop is closed 3-16 September for a bookseller recharge (see pinned post on page).

Here's a book I should have shared with you all a few weeks ago.... I've just come across this copy in the shop. Before we all forget how unrelenting this summer's heatwaves were, this is a super novel set in the long, hot summer of 1976 (before I was born, I'd like to add!).

Published in 2008, A Mile of River is by Northamptonshire author, Judith Allnatt.

With severe drought on the way, there couldn't be a more disastrous scenario for 17-year-old Jess and her younger brother Tom, who live on a dairy farm with their dad. The farm was already struggling to make ends meed without this extra burden of drought to add to the crisis. Essentially Jess's story, the book is about the difficulties Jess faces with her over-protective and increasingly stern father. Jess works hard on the farm, and works hard on her studies too when she's allowed to go to school. Without her mum from the age of six, she's also been like a mum to her little brother Tom, and she's responsible for cooking and cleaning the house. What Jess would really like is just a little bit of time to be a normal teenager, allowed to go to the fair with her friends and sit her university exams. Tensions between Jess and her dad reach an all time high as the drought worsens, river levels drop, and Jess begins to unravel the shocking truth about her mum's disappearance. The novel shows a deep insight into discord within a struggling family unit, written with a true depth of emotion and understanding. A sensitive and compelling novel that adults and teens alike will enjoy for its exploration of adolescence, love, loss, hardship and times of change.
