Looking for a September day out in the Lakes? 🌿

The Westmorland County Show is back on 9th & 10th September, and it’s a lovely reason to plan a few days in the South Lakes.

Set on the fringes of the Lake District, it’s one of the UK’s favourite county shows, with livestock classes, heavy and light horses, alpacas, goats, pigs, sheep, cattle, local food, countryside traditions and plenty to wander around.

We have availability at Larchside Apartment from Monday 7th September for a 3-night stay for £435.

It makes a great little September break: enjoy the show, explore Windermere and Bowness, then come back to somewhere peaceful and comfortable at the end of the day. 💚

☔ What do you like to do when the Lake District weather isn't playing ball?

A guest recently asked me for a few rainy-day ideas, so I thought I'd share some of my suggestions.

🧖 Spa day? Low Wood Bay is considered one of the best spa experiences in the Lakes. I've not tried it myself yet, but it looks like a real treat! For something a little more local, try The Lakeside Hotel with its lovely large pool (and great afternoon tea!), or the smaller spa at The Swan, Newby Bridge.

🎬 Cinema & wine? Zeffirellis and Fellinis in Ambleside are both great little cinemas with big comfy seats – and at Fellinis you can even take a glass of wine in with you!

🚗 Something different? The Motor Museum at Backbarrow is only 10–15 minutes away, or head a little further to The Dock Museum in Barrow for some fascinating local history.

And naturally, most of these suggestions involve somewhere for coffee and cake afterwards... there seems to be a theme with my recommendations! ☕😄

🌅 Where's your favourite place to watch the sunset?

One of the things we never tire of is watching the sun set over Lake Windermere.

After a day exploring, there's something really special about returning to your apartment, pouring a drink and heading up to the shared garden to watch the evening light change across the lake and surrounding fells.

It's one of those simple moments our guests often tell us they remember most.

☀️ Have you squeezed everything you want out of summer yet?

There's still plenty of time to enjoy everything the Lake District has to offer.

Whether it's a cruise on Lake Windermere, a lazy afternoon in a café, an evening stroll through Bowness or simply relaxing in our shared garden with those panoramic lake views, August is a wonderful time to visit.

We're pleased to still have availability in both Fellside Studio and Larchside Apartment if you're planning a late summer escape.

How would you spend a perfect August day in the Lakes?

Can I pick your brains? ☕

I currently provide a cafetière and fresh ground coffee in all my properties, which I think is a lovely way to start a holiday morning.

But... at home I have a Nespresso machine and I have to admit, I love it! 😄

So now I'm wondering if I'm giving guests what they actually want.

If you were staying with me, would you rather have:

☕ A cafetière with fresh ground coffee

or

☕ A Nespresso pod machine?

Are you a "proper coffee" person who enjoys the whole ritual, or do you think life's too short and just want a great coffee at the touch of a button? ☕😄

Let me know in the comments – your answers might just influence my next purchase! 👀☕❤️

🌿 Peaceful countryside, Bowness just 10 minutes away

One of the things our guests love most is the location — a quiet, rural spot where you can truly switch off, yet Bowness-on-Windermere is just a 10-minute drive away.

As a recent 5⭐ guest put it, “Bowness was easily accessible, as was a lot of the eastern Lakes.”

The best of both worlds: peace and countryside on your doorstep, with the Lake District’s favourite spots within easy reach. 🏡⛰️

📅 We have a few dates available over the coming weeks:

FELLSIDE STUDIO (sleeps 2, dog friendly - fee applies)
21 Aug · 3 nights · £448
24 Aug · 3 nights · £420
24 Aug · 4 nights · £532
28 Aug · Bank Holiday Weekend · 3 nights · £480

LARCHSIDE APARTMENT (sleeps 2)

🌊 Have you ever tried wild swimming?

A guest recently asked me for some local recommendations, so I thought I'd share them here too.

I do a bit of wild swimming but I'm not very adventurous and mainly stick to Lake Windermere! 😊

My favourite easy access spots are:

💙 Fell Foot Park – probably my favourite. Easy access into the lake, changing facilities and a lovely café afterwards.

💙 Millerground or Rayrigg Meadow in Bowness are also great local options.

If you're happy to venture a little further...

🏊 Rydal Water is usually a little warmer than Windermere in summer because it's much shallower. It's also the perfect excuse to combine your swim with a walk to Rydal Caves.

🏊 High Dam, near Lakeside, is another lovely peaceful spot.

🏊 I've also enjoyed swimming at Brown Howe on Coniston Water, which has a nice gentle sloping entry.

If you're completely new to open water swimming, I'd really recommend reading the beginner safety advice from Swim the Lakes before taking the plunge.

Have you tried wild swimming? Or are you happier admiring the lakes from dry land? 😊

❤️ What's your favourite Lake District view?

Mine has to be Orrest Head.

I often walk up there a couple of times a week. If I head up early enough, I can have the summit to myself and, whether it's sunrise, sunset or somewhere in between, the view across Lake Windermere never gets old.

The best part? It's close enough to fit into my busiest day, and afterwards I can enjoy a great coffee on the way down. ☕

That said... if I don't fancy the walk, I simply wander to the top of the garden at Fellside & Larchside Apartments. The panoramic view across Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells is pretty special too—and with much less effort! 😊

🐟 Is there anything better than fish & chips by the lake?

We recently tried the new Trenchers Fish & Chip Restaurant in Bowness and weren't disappointed! If you've visited Whitby before, you may already know just how good their fish and chips are.

The food was delicious, the restaurant is lovely and, on one of the hottest days of the year, the air conditioning was an added bonus! 😄

Top tip: if you're taking a cruise on Lake Windermere, show your cruise ticket at Trenchers for 10% off your meal.

Have you been yet? We'd love to know what you thought.
