The Old Lockup

The Old Lockup Now, it's a gorgeously cosy guest house. Built in 1842, initially as a magistrates house it then served as a police station for 100 years. D.

The Old Lock-Up, situated in the market town of Wirksworth, Derbyshire, was originally a 19th century magistrates’ house then a police station, complete with cells. H Lawrence and his German wife Frieda reported here weekly during the 1914-18 war as she was listed as an alien. Convicted murderer George Townley was locked up in one of the four cells before going to Derby Assizes in 1861. A day boo

k, discovered during renovations, written in meticulous copperplate, charts the comings and goings of the lead-mining community of Wirksworth a century ago, from the trivial to the tragic. Town drunks, lead miners and quarry workers many of them, who had washed away their hard-earned wages, would be sobered up in a downstairs cell ironically now the bar. One original cell with it's steel-lined door and stone flagged floor remains as it was to give visitors a glimpse of conditions in the 1800's. The Old Lock Up, once a spartan gaol, now has the last word in luxury. Each of the Old Lock Up’s four bedrooms tells a tale, in addition to their original features and antique beds. One was the magistrate’s room itself, while the others, the solicitor’s room, the coachman’s room and the hayloft ooze history. All of the rooms are en-suite and the guest house also boasts an invigorating double air-bath ideal for soothing away the stresses of the city or relaxing aching muscles after a day walking the Dales, a glass of wine adds to an unforgettable experience. Great breakfast and evening meal options are also a relief if you just want to soak up the atmosphere and do as little as humanly possible. Open all year round, The Old Lock Up is more than a stopover for tourists to the Peak District. Thirteen miles from Derby and close to the M1 Motorway, it is ideally placed for people looking to explore the area, or visiting on business. The difference meets you at the heavy barred oak door. Directions: Turn off A6 at Cromford, take B5036 and go up hill for Wirksworth, down into town, after infant school turn left into North End, Third dwelling on left.

Just wondering if anyone has had any relatives from Australia visiting recently who may have stayed here in the Coach House at the Old Lockup? I've found a purse with a few items in it but no ID. There's an Australian postage stamp and watch repair ticket, and this note, together with a few other bits I'm sure they would like to be reunited with. The purse was jammed at the back of a drawer and I've no idea how long it's been there. Hoping the Wirksworth hive-mind can weave its magic.

Wishing a merry Christmas and a happy healthy New Year to all my guests, friends and family.

It's been a long year but the Lockup is open for business once again.

We've taken the opportunity to do some upgrading and decorating during the enforced shutdown and the rooms in the Coachhouse have had a complete face lift.

Government and industry guidelines are changing all the time and we are regularly updating procedures here in order to ensure the safety of guests and staff. New procedures and cleaning practices have been introduced and while it is possible that some facilities here will not be available we will do our best to ensure your stay will be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Rooms now have one day cleaning buffer between stays when they are given a deep clean between guests and all common touch surfaces are sanitised.

Guests are asked to wear face coverings on arrival and to use hand sanitiser before being shown to their rooms. Sanitiser is provided in the reception area. Guests are also asked to keep a 2m distance from other guests wherever possible.

In order to minimise contact rooms will not be serviced during your stay but any additional toiletries, tea/coffee etc, fresh towels will be available on request

Staff here are fully vaccinated and testing for CV19 twice weekly, guests are encouraged to take up the invitations for vaccinations and offers of free lateral flow test kits if they are able to do so.

Still here and thinking about better times ahead. Meanwhile, this is what you're all missing.
