I remember these 😂

Before pumpkins took over Halloween, we had these! 👻🕯️

Long before supermarket pumpkins and elaborate doorstep displays, many families in Yorkshire and across the UK hollowed out swedes and turnips to make Halloween lanterns.

For generations, children carved spooky faces into the tougher root vegetables, often with a little help from mum, dad, or grandparents, then placed a candle inside to create a wonderfully eerie glow. It was a tradition closely linked to Samhain and old Halloween customs, and for many, the smell of a scooped-out turnip is just as much a part of Halloween as fancy dress and toffee apples.

Plenty of people still remember calling them turnip jack-o'-lanterns, even when they were often made from a swede, and they were a familiar sight before pumpkins became the Halloween favourite we know today.

They may not have been quite as easy to carve, or as picture-perfect as a pumpkin, but there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about those old-fashioned lanterns and the memories that come with them.
