🌊 September swells are here…

With warmer water, quieter beaches and the first autumn swells beginning to roll in, September is one of our favourite times to surf in North Devon.

From mellow beginner-friendly waves at Woolacombe and golden-hour glides at Saunton, to sheltered Putsborough when it’s blowing a hoolie, and Croyde for those who like their waves big, fast and a little dumpy!

Is there anything quite like the North Devon coast in early autumn? 💙

These gorgeous drone shots were captured by one of our owners at Rockham One last weekend, and just look at that view across Woolacombe Bay.

The air feels beautifully clear and pure at this time of year, the light is softer, and the coastline seems to stretch on forever. Autumn by the sea really is something special.

🌒 Yes, we know. Another solar eclipse post…

But when the universe schedules one of its biggest shows above Woolacombe Bay, it would be rather rude of us not to mention it.

This evening, Wednesday 12 August, a partial solar eclipse will begin at around 6.15pm and reach its maximum shortly after 7.10pm.

If the Devon clouds kindly remain elsewhere, these are three of our favourite local viewing spots:

*Woolacombe Dunes and Woolacombe Down
Close to Byron, with elevated views across the bay and plenty of open Atlantic sky.

*Morte Point
The dramatic choice: sweeping clifftop views, Morte Stone below and an uninterrupted horizon ahead.

*Baggy Point
A little farther afield, but worth it for panoramic views across Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe Bay.

For an easier, family-friendly option, Woolacombe Beach offers a wonderfully open horizon without navigating a clifftop path as the light fades.

Please arrive early, keep to established paths, stay well back from cliff edges and bring a torch for the journey home.

Most importantly, only view the eclipse through certified eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.

Woolacombe may shine in summer, but some of its loveliest moments arrive after the crowds begin to drift home.

Autumn brings golden light and quieter beaches. Winter offers wild Atlantic skies, wonderfully bracing walks and the perfect excuse to retreat somewhere warm. Then spring returns with longer days, clifftop flowers and the coastline slowly coming back to life.

At Byron, you can enjoy sea views, slow mornings and, in selected apartments, even your own private hot tub waiting after a day beside the Atlantic.

We are open all year round, because Woolacombe is far too beautiful to save for summer.
