Etal Castle is a short drive from the cottage in the small village of Etal. It’s a 12 century fortress built against the marauding Scottish, which is now an English Heritage site. It’s close to a small gauge train, and a lovely pub and tea rooms.

Howtel has a little known Pele or Peel Tower from the 15th Century. It’s just behind our cottage. Pele Towers were built along the English/Scottish borders as ‘watch towers’ and often used to light beacons. Originally this one had 3 floors but has stood in ruins since King James IV of Scotland destroyed it in 1496 🏰💥
