🏃‍♀️ Good luck to everyone taking on today’s York Marathon! 🏃‍♂️

An extra special shout-out to our lovely guests who’ve been staying with us and are lacing up their trainers this@morning at the crack of dawn! 👏

Whatever your motivation, whether it’s a personal challenge, a bucket-list moment or raising money for a cause close to your heart, we hope you enjoy every mile. Good Morning Friday! ☕️🌫️ My favourite time of the day! ❤️

A lovely view as ever down the village and across the rolling Wolds. You can’t quite see it in the photos, but there’s a fabulous, eerie mist drifting across the ground this morning… a little bit of magic in the Yorkshire countryside! 🍂

Today has been a first for us, and a very emotional one. ❤️

We attended our first double funeral, saying goodbye to Alan Thompson (Big Al), who worked for three generations of our family for nearly 5 decades, and his beloved wife Maureen, who passed away unexpectedly. Just days later, Alan followed her, leaving us wondering whether a broken heart played its part.

Big Al was the quintessential “ear all, see all, say nowt”! Did he see change! When he first started on the farm, an ox and plough were still the only machinery! It came out today he registered to be a farm worker aged 12! Farming and the country was a way of life for him. Massey Ferguson became his tractor of choice, and he kept every tractor allocated to him absolutely immaculate. He even took the keys on holiday with him, much to everyone else’s dismay! 😂

A mountain of a man, but a gentle giant. I can still picture him and Maureen at our wedding and was my Grans neighbour for so long.

A lovely service and wake gave us the chance to share stories with his nieces and friends to reminisce about farming life and remember days gone by.

Rest peacefully, Big Al and Maureen. A true gentleman, a devoted husband and a much-loved part of our family’s history. You’ll both be remembered with great affection. ❤️ NFU North Yorkshire Agricultural Society

Last night, the aurora. Tonight, simply peace. 🌌🍂

October’s skies have clearly been at the sherry! Last night, the Northern Lights danced above our Yorkshire cottages. Tonight, it’s all about peace, quiet and the beauty of the countryside.

When the news feels overwhelming and the world seems to have gone completely bonkers, sometimes you just need to look up, take a breath and remember there’s still plenty of beauty in it. ❤️

Our luxury country cottages near York are perfect for getting away from it all. Hot tubs, autumn walks, cosy evenings and private chefs if cooking feels far too energetic.

Want a proper escape? We can even deactivate the WiFi! 😱 (We recommend breaking the news gently to the teenagers.)

No notifications, no doom-scrolling, just countryside calm. We can’t guarantee the aurora, but we can promise a lovely place to switch off.

✨ The Northern Lights, right here at our cottages! 💚💜

Well, Mother Nature certainly put on a show last night! The Aurora Borealis dancing across the Yorkshire sky, viewed right here from our cottages. You can travel thousands of miles chasing a view like this, or, if you’re lucky, simply step outside your cottage and look up. 🥰

A little reminder that sometimes the most magical holiday memories are the ones you never planned.

Yorkshire, you really are rather special. 💚

Amazing lunch with great friends, followed by a lovely evening walk when we got home and some absolutely ridiculous skies.

Good food, good company, plenty of laughs and a sunset that clearly felt the need to show off.

Feeling very grateful for days like this. The sort where you eat far too much, walk just enough to pretend it cancels out the lunch, and finish the day thinking, “Yep… we’ll have some of that again please.”

Thank you to brilliant friends, beautiful places and Mother Nature for putting on the evening shift.

Collect memories, not things… although I wouldn’t say no to another lunch. 😂

🎂🐾 HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY LOLA! 🐾🎂

You may or may not realise this, but there is method in our madness…

All our hounds are named after cars 🚗 and all our cottages are named after the hounds. So today, it’s only right that Lola gets her moment in the spotlight!

And what better way to celebrate turning 7 than a day on the East Coast? 🌊

Ball throwing ✔️
Paddling in the sea ✔️
Getting absolutely covered in sand ✔️
Dragging half the beach home with her ✔️
A piping hot pot of tea on the cobble landing ✔️
Fish and chips lunch ✔️
Then home with a couple of fresh crabs and a lobster for supper ✔️

And it was great to see the RNLI out and about too. A special mention to them, particularly after some of the frankly ridiculous messages and comments that have been directed their way recently.

Whatever your views, these are volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way to help people in trouble at sea. That deserves a bit of respect. ❤️

Obviously, after all that hard birthday partying, all five of us needed bathing and showering.

The hounds, naturally, got dressing gowns.

Because apparently being a dog at This Is Not Here comes with certain expectations. 😂

Then came an amazing, ridiculously simple fresh meal for under £30. Proof, once again, that good food doesn’t need to cost a fortune.

And for anyone staying in one of our cottages, we even offer a completely free demonstration in how to deal with fresh crab and lobster.

Because where else would you learn holiday cottage hospitality, seafood preparation and hound pampering all under one roof? 🦀🦞🐾

From **Wharram Percy**, one of England’s best-preserved medieval villages, to **Stamford Bridge**, steeped in Viking and Saxon history, and the atmospheric streets and famous Snickelways of York, there’s history pretty much everywhere you look.

As the October evenings draw in, there are ghost walks winding through the Snickelways, plenty of suitably spooky goings-on, and even some rather mysterious happenings recently caught on CCTV at **Barley Hall**… 👀

Coincidence?

We’ll let you decide.

Then, after a day exploring York, history, ghosts and everything in between, head back to **This Is Not Here**, sink into the hot tub, pour yourself something nice and relax.

Although if you hear footsteps outside…

We’re saying nothing.

And if the hot tub suddenly bubbles when nobody is in it…

Definitely nothing. 😂

Because sometimes the best memories are the ones you’re not entirely sure happened.

11 September - A date that makes you stop and reflect for a moment.

A date that makes you think, simply, where was I?

There are certain moments in history that divide the world into before and after. The World Wars, the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and then 11 September 2001.

Twenty-five years ago today, the world changed.

We remember those who lost their lives, but also those who bravely ran towards the danger to save others. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage.

Our gate reminds us of a motto of grandfathers and their area of the Royal Navy:

“Where the Fleet Goes, We’ve Been.” - A simple phrase, but one that says a great deal about duty, courage and being prepared to go where you are needed.

And yet this morning, standing here, everything feels wonderfully peaceful.

Dew on the grass, mist over the fields, the sun slowly appearing… and actual green, green grass. After the summer we’ve had, that’s almost historic in itself.

It makes you wonder what this land has witnessed over the centuries. Wars, celebrations, hardship and peace, while generations simply carried on with ordinary life.

The world changes. Sometimes dramatically.

But the sun still rises, the mist lifts and the grass keeps growing.

Perhaps that’s something worth appreciating and reflecting on a little more today.
