Holiday moments no.3: you set out from the house for an adventure!

Maybe you want a 'walk from the door' outing - take your pick from family friendly fun at Woldies, gorgeous gardens and bakes in Scampston or miles of downland walking on the Wolds Way.

Or maybe you want to go further afield? Trips to the beach (caves or sand? Flamborough or Scaborough?), to the forests and moors 20 minutes away past Pickering. Or perhaps you want some shopping and culture in York.

There's so much to do a week may not be enough - let us know your favourite Yorkshire outings in the comments below😍

A quick question - What's the first thing you pack to go on holiday with your dog?

At Deer Park House we need to upgrade our 'don't forget the doggies' cupboard, so that owners don't have to fret about forgetting leads / poo bags / some toys / dog towels.

There might be some other things I'm missing, so please do share what are the essentials that make a holiday with your dog fun and relaxed? Let us know in the comments.

Does anyone know their dragonflies?

The historic park at Deer Park House has always had lots of great insects; beautiful butterflies and moths, endless grasshoppers in the summer.

But this absolute unit turned up next door last week at Woldies and I think we might have gone back in time to when dragonflies were a foot long.

And just when I thought the insect excitement was over we saw our first hummingbird hawk moth in the garden. Absolutely gorgeous with his grumpy little face.

Please tag in anyone who likes their insects!

(And if you would like to spend some time in the middle of all of these wildlife riches, we still have some short breaks left in Sept. Message me for details).

Gorgeous eclipse picture taken by one of our lovely neighbours at [Deer Park House](1540266062866929).

Am I the only person who spends lots of time on holiday watching the sky? Sitting outside, listening to family chat, checking out the sunset or the stars. When we're all so busy sometimes a chance to stop and look up is the most valuable thing we can give ourselves.

For more big skies (and stargazing) we have some weekend breaks remaining before the end of the year. Winter, summer, night or day, there's always something to see - do drop me a line to check availability.

Looking for somewhere to get away from the heat?

When not running Deer Park, my life is spent monitoring what works to make housing more comfortable and energy efficient. This year - not surprisingly - it's all been about how to keep homes cool.

So, if you're booking a summer house in the UK, here are three, science based, tips for you to book the comfortable house and reduce your risk of hot, sticky and sleepless nights:

1. look for an older building, especially stone or brick. They often have higher ceilings, better ventilation and more 'thermal mass' which holds the cool for longer.
2. check you will be able to open windows or doors over night. 'Purge' ventilation (getting cold air in the house after dark) is vital to reset the temperature before the next hot day. Check your rental isn't in a location (like a busy road) where you won't be able to do this.
3.is there green space around the house? Gardens, trees, even a vine, plants are very effective at reducing temperature, even more so than man made shading.

Several guests at Deer Park this year have been very grateful for the cooler nights we get in North Yorkshire, but even if you're looking for something a lot smaller bear these rules in mind and hopefully you will get a truly relaxing break.

- literally miles of offroad walking from the door
- a big park and stream (with much wildlife) to explore. Sticks, sticks, so many fine sticks!😉
- an enclosed garden for zoomies with peace of mind
- plenty of space (and log burners) to spread out with the hoomans in the downstairs living room
- dog friendly pubs and cafes at the end of good walks
- spare dog towels, bowls, poo bags, leads in case your hooman has a packing crisis.

Deer Park has been home to so many dogs over the years. We'd love to welcome yours and we have some late summer / autumn dates available for dog lovers everywhere. Follow us Deer Park House for dates, or DM us
