🌾 September at Westergate House 🌾

Did you know that all our rooms have a York story behind them, inspired by the city and the surrounding area, past and present?

Fawkes & Turpin, Leeman & Hudson, Terry & Rowntree, The Gimcrack… and this is Field & Furrow, inspired by the agriculture of the beautiful Vale of York.

We’ve recently given it a little refresh, and we love how the new wallpaper brings those familiar Yorkshire fields right into the room. 🌾 And there’s a little seating area tucked into the bay window, where you can sit and look out across the very fields that inspired it, towards the Yorkshire Wolds.

With the summer holidays coming to an end, September is a lovely time for a little escape. The children are back at school, York is a little calmer and there’s still plenty to see and do — hopefully with some lovely late-summer sunshine thrown in!

We have some special 3-night offers available throughout September, so why not make a few days of it?

And so it begins… 🏇🍾

The first night of four Ebor nights here at Westergate House!

The house is full and there’s such a lovely atmosphere already. One of our favourite things about Ebor week is seeing guests who stay with us each year arriving back and immediately catching up with each other.

It’s like they’ve never been away! Lots of hugs, laughter, stories from the past year over cups of tea & of course cake ! , in the guest lounge

For the next four days, it’s all about enjoying ourselves, having a good time and putting all the difficult things in the world to one side.

And now… best get to bed! 😴

With so many overseas guests staying with us this summer, it’s been fascinating to discover how breakfast tastes can differ from ours.

We’ve enjoyed learning what our guests like and have tweaked a few of our breakfast choices along the way:

🍳 Mushroom & cheese omelette with mushroom duxelles
🐟 Smoked salmon & poached eggs
🍒 Brioche French toast with cherry compote
🥬 Scrambled eggs with tomatoes & spinach
🥔 Potato rosti with poached egg, spinach & cheese

And, of course, you don’t have to choose a full English. You can always try something different, or let us know what you fancy and we’ll do our best to adapt breakfast to your taste.

York Christmas Market is coming around earlier again this year — 12th November to 21st December!

But perhaps that’s not such a bad thing… it means you can spread the Christmas shopping and festive visits out a little, rather than trying to squeeze everything into December. 🎁😊

And of course, it’s another lovely excuse to come and see us in York! ❤️

From 12 November to 21 December, the heart of York will once again be filled with festive chalets, seasonal treats, unique gifts and plenty of Christmas atmosphere.

This year, the Christmas Market will be open six days a week, with Tuesdays closed for a rest day. But York is open and ready to welcome you seven days a week, with Christmas events, attractions, independent shopping, food and drink, cosy accommodation and much more to discover across the city. ❤️

A Little Gem Above Whitby

Many of our guests choose to stay a little longer at Westergate House so they can explore more of Yorkshire. Whitby is a favourite, with its mix of history, coast and countryside.

Just above Whitby, you’ll find this little gem.

I remember it well from many years ago, when I catered for a country landowners’ AGM held in a marquee there. I also visited the family home for a pre-event meeting, so I can personally vouch for what a beautiful place it is.

It’s another lovely spot to add to your Yorkshire itinerary, and well worth the drive from Westergate House.

After 36 hours of stress, head scratching and lifting floorboards to trace the fault… we finally found the culprit that had been tripping the electrics! 💡

Who would have thought one tiny fault could create so much work?

The good news is everything is now sorted, back together, and ready to welcome our guests as normal.

A huge thank you to Dave at Green Olive Utility , who came to our rescue through allonenetwork, and of course to Paul, whose determination to get to the bottom of it meant Dave had an enthusiastic apprentice for the day. Between them, they finally got to the root of the problem!

Now it’s time to put the tools away, put the kettle on and get back to doing what we love best. 😊
