🎒 A BIG WEEK AHEAD

Chatting to some of our younger guests over the Bank Holiday weekend, we discovered that a couple will be starting in reception class tomorrow, while others are preparing for their very first day at secondary school.

There was a lovely mix of nerves and excitement in our conversations (and that was just the parents), and we would like to wish every one of them the very best for their first day. We look forward to hearing all about it when you next visit us!

To all our younger guests heading back to school/college, whether you are starting somewhere new or returning for another year, we hope you have a happy and successful school year ahead. 💛

Slingsby Sports Club have just announced that £2,075.50 has been raised for Yorkshire Air Ambulance 🚁❤️ Well done to all those involved.

🏏 Congratulations to Slingsby XI on winning Slingsby’s Memorial Cricket Match, held in memory of Dave Calvert & Pete Stark. ❤️

Thank you to all of our guests who came along to support the community and enjoy such a fabulous event. It was lovely to see so many people there, enjoying the cricket and sharing memories of Dave and Pete.

Damian played cricket with Pete, and Dave will no doubt have umpired some of Damian’s matches over the years, so it was especially lovely for him to be part of the day and remember some of those cricketing days.

He didn’t get the chance to bat this time, but he did make a very good fielder! 😂 And we have to say, the wicket looked fabulous! 👌

Well done to everyone involved in putting such a lovely event together. 🏏❤️

Another one ticked off my 50 before 50! 🎉

And this one was suggested by one of our lovely guests, so a big thank you for the challenge! ❤️

Last night we headed to Thecooksplacemalton for a cookery class. There are lots of different classes to choose from, but we went for Date Night as it was something we could both enjoy — and what a fabulous evening it was!

With Gilly’s guidance, we cooked rainbow meatballs followed by a peach dessert, had plenty of laughs and, of course, got to eat what we’d made. 😋

Definitely something I’d recommend.

We also met Huw Rolands, who was there preparing for the sessions he is holding this weekend. Both he and Gilly made us feel really relaxed and shared some great hints, tips and stories.

There are lots of masterclasses running throughout the weekend, including a Bubbles and Buttercream and an Afternoon Tea Masterclass. With a wet weekend forecast, why not treat yourselves to something a little different? ☕️🍰

Always nice to discover and support a local business too. ❤️

Challenge accepted, challenge completed! ✔️

🏏 ANNUAL MEMORIAL CRICKET MATCH

Preparations are well underway for this year’s Annual Memorial Cricket Match, taking place on:

📅 Sunday 30 August
⏰ From 12 noon onwards

Traditionally, the match has been played between a current Slingsby Cricket Club XI and the Dave Calvert XI, made up of former players and people who knew Dave, the much-missed former chairman of Slingsby Sports Club.

Following the sad loss of former player Pete Stark earlier this year, the event will also remember Pete and will take on a new format—a four-team tournament featuring:

🏏 Slingsby CC XI
🏏 Dave Calvert XI
🏏 Hovingham CC XI
🏏 Pete Stark XI

Damian previously played for Slingsby alongside Pete and Pete’s brother, Chris, so there is one question we have to ask…

Will this special occasion tempt Damian back into his cricket whites? 👀🏏

As announced this afternoon, disposable BBQs have been temporarily banned from sale over fears they pose a "significant risk to the public" as drought and heatwave conditions continue to grip the UK

If using an electric or gas BBQ, please ensure it is raised safely off the ground, kept well away from grass, caravans, awnings and other flammable materials, and never left unattended.

Campfires and fire pits are not allowed anywhere on the park.

🌘 Do you remember where you were for the 1999 solar eclipse?

Tonight, we’ll get another chance to see the moon pass in front of the sun, with up to 95% of the sun covered here in the UK.

According to BBC Yorkshire, the eclipse will begin at around 6.12–6.19pm, reaching its peak about an hour later, before finishing shortly after 8pm. 🌞🌑

It’s got us thinking back to the last one - 11th August 1999. I was working at Crow’s Nest Caravan Park at the time, celebrating my birthday and remember standing at the top of the drive, in front of the sales fleet, watching the eclipse with my free glasses from the newspaper.

Funny how certain moments stick in your memory.
