This building dates back to 1417 and was home to generations for the Bowes family. It was Martin Bowes who went on to be Lord Mayor of London and the goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I. It is also reputed to be the birthplace of the mother of General James Wolfe who himself died at the age of 32 during commanding the British Army in Quebec in 1759. The Black Swan is one of many notoriously haunted sites in York with a number of spooky and ghostly sightings from the man in the bowler hat who has been seen standing at the bar tutting and waiting impatiently to be served! Or the woman in white who is said to wear a long flowing white dress with long glowing black hair covering her face, staring into the fire place longingly, legend has it that if you were to stare into her face then you would die in ecstasy due to her profound beauty.
