Hidden away in peaceful Kirkdale, just beyond the North York Moors, you'll discover another hidden gem: St Gregory's Minster. ⛪

The church is best known for its rare Anglo-Saxon sundial, positioned above the south door. Its Old English inscription tells the story of how St Gregory's was rebuilt after falling into disrepair during the final years of Saxon rule between 1055 and 1065.

But the story goes back even further. Archaeologists believe there may have been an earlier church on the site dating to around AD 750, likely founded as a branch of the monastery at Lastingham, home to the oldest surviving Norman crypt in the world.

After exploring the church, we recommend heading out on a scenic walk along Hodge Beck, through peaceful woodland towards the edge of the North York Moors. 🌿

And if you fancy stepping even further back in time, take a short detour to Kirkdale Cave. This important prehistoric site has revealed fossil remains dating back around 125,000 years, including straight-tusked elephants, hippopotamuses, narrow-nosed rhinoceroses, cave hyenas, cave lions, Irish elk, brown bears, red deer and fallow deer. 🦴

Have you visited St Gregory's Minster or Kirkdale Cave?
