Fast forward 12 months and the exterior of the old school is starting to look more like a house.
This was once the old school house of Jughaani Village in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Georgia.
Built in the 1940’s as a school, it was sadly abandoned over 50 years ago in the Soviet times and became extremely derelict.
When the school closed it was used by the local farmers to protect their cattle from the wolves and jackals throughout the harsh winter.
There was no roof or windows and most of the floors and ceilings had collapsed over the years, mainly caused by Mother Nature but also due to the many cows and sheep that slept in here, can you imagine the smell, let’s just say it took a while to remove decades of animal Manure.. 💩
The school house never had a toilet, running water, electricity or gas, instead the toilet was a simple hole in the field, with a rickety old wooden hut sat over the top, which is very typical here in Georgia.
Candles were used of a night, a wood stove to keep warm in the winter months, and drinking water was collected from the nearby fresh water spring, thats when it’s not frozen! in fact we still use the nearby spring for drinking water, it’s our weekly walk to fill many bottles, and of course, the outside toilet is still in use!
