Tourists on Alert: These Greek Islands Face an Extreme Wildfire Threat

Visitors heading to some of Greece's most popular holiday destinations are being urged to stay alert after authorities issued a Category 4 (Very High) wildfire risk warning for several regions due to hot, dry weather and strong winds.

The warning affects Crete, including the regional units of Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi, as well as the North Aegean islands of Chios, Psara, Samos, and Ikaria, where conditions could allow any fire to spread rapidly if one ignites.

Civil Protection authorities have placed emergency services on heightened alert and are urging both residents and tourists to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including lighting barbecues, burning vegetation, or using equipment that produces flames or sparks.

The elevated danger comes as Greece continues to experience above-average temperatures combined with strong northerly winds, creating ideal conditions for fast-moving wildfires. Officials are reminding visitors to stay informed through local emergency alerts and follow any instructions issued by authorities if conditions change.

Please be vigilant 🙁

Greek authorities have placed several areas of Crete and the North Aegean under a Category 4 (Very High) wildfire risk warning for Monday, July 6, as hot, dry weather and favorable fire conditions continue to threaten parts of the country.

The warning covers the regional units of Heraklion, Rethymno, and Lasithi on Crete, along with the islands of Chios, Psara, Samos, and Ikaria in the North Aegean.

In response, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has ordered all relevant agencies, municipalities, and regional authorities to remain on heightened alert. The Fire Service has also activated the second stage of its operational readiness plan, increasing aerial surveillance and expanding patrols by firefighters, police, and military personnel in vulnerable areas.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to avoid any activities that could spark a wildfire, including burning vegetation, using equipment that produces sparks, lighting outdoor barbecues, or discarding lit ci******es. Burning agricultural fields remains strictly prohibited during the fire season.

Anyone who spots smoke or a fire is urged to immediately contact the Greek Fire Service by calling 199, allowing emergency crews to respond as quickly as possible.
