Selianitika (Greek: Σελιανίτικα) is a coastal village in northern Achaea, Peloponnese, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Sympoliteia. It is located 2 km northwest of Rododafni, 6 km northwest of Aigio and 26 km east of Patras, at about 30m above sea level. The villages Selianitika and Longos (adjacent to the northwest) share a beautiful beach of fine gravel on the Gulf of Corinth which is approximately 1.5 km long. Both villages are among the most popular summer destinations of Achaea. The village had a population of 902 in 2011. The Greek National Road 8A (Athens - Corinth - Patras) passes south of the village.

he name Selianitika is derived from the name of the village of Seliana. According to A. Fotopoulos, the descent of inhabitants of Seliana from the mountains to the coastal region of "Kryovrysi" near Aigio (where the village of Selianitika lies today) started to happen during the Ottoman period. Initially the residents of Seliana were spending the winter in Selianitika and the summer in their village of Seliana but later they settled permanently. The residents of Seliana carried with them the parish of Saint Basil (the oldest of Seliana's churches) and today Saint Basil is the patron saint of the village of Selianitika.

CAVINO Winery & Distillery

History: The official references about the monastery vineyard exist from 1550. The domain and winery were using by monks for viticulture and harvesting of grapes. The monks transported the grape must by mules to monastery's famous cellar where they decant it to 500lt wooden barrels. Local workers were involved in this process helping to monks and glorifying the Great Vineyard "Megali Ambelos" and its wine. At the end of 80th decade the viticulture of grapes was stopped due to gradual leaving of monks from monastery.

Viticulture: The renovation of the vineyard and planting of new vines took place in 1999 with the long term tenancy of Mega Spileo's abbey. Linear vineries of late germinative cycle planted with local and international varieties Mavrodafne, Mavro Kalavritino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Lagorthi, Asyrtiko, Malagouzia, Riesling. Plants density: 4100 plants per ha.

Ground: Sandy with argil and gravel.

Altitude: 780 - 880 m.

Unique "Vostitsa" Corinthian Raisins

The main types of raisins, which are distinguished by their quality, in terms of priority, are «the Vostitsa", the "Gulf" and "the Provincial". The world famous raisins named «Vostitsa» («VOSTIZZA») are regarded as the superior quality raisins and boast
a wonderful aroma and unique flavour.

The "Vostitsa" is grown only in the hilly and mountainous area of Aigialeia.
Its cultivation began in 1300 AD. The excellent climate and fertile soil of the area help create a high quality product.
What differentiates the Corinthian variety "Vostizza" among other varieties is the slope of the vineyard’s microclimate,
the favourable soil and selected small "Black Currants" (Vitis Vinifera L) which is a form of dried grapes from a special variety of black grape. It is regarded as one of the most historical products cultivated in Greece since ancient times.
The raisins "Vostizza" has been certified by the European Union as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) since 1998.

Aigio: A Little Taste of Paradise

Located on the northern coast of the Peloponnese, Aigio, once the centre of Greece’s rich currant export trade, has lots to offer in terms of history, sightseeing and cuisine.

When my husband asked me a decade ago about moving to Aigio, I had to ask where it was. As I now thankfully know, it is located in the most beautiful part of the Gulf of Corinth. For me it is also a place of inspiration, as I have written a book (both German and Greek versions are available) about the War of Independence, which also played out in the small city.

I was even more impressed when I learned about its rich history: it was first mentioned by Homer, who stated that this was the point where the Achaean fleet gathered for its journey to Troy. Pausanias rested here on his travels and has, over time, become identified with an enormous plane that has been standing for centuries at the seafront, awaiting visitors.

After the Fourth Crusade the area was conquered by the Franks, who founded the Principality of Achaia, one of three major vassal states of the Latin Empire. The Peloponnese still contains many castles that are silent remains and witnesses of this period. German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann passed through Aigio on his way to Troy, where he would discover King Priam’s Treasure. In 1821, one of the first meetings of Filiki Eteria (the Greek secret organization whose purpose was to overthrow the Ottoman rule) took place in a house in Aigio that can still be seen. Many believe that Aigio, together with Kalamata, was the first Greek city to be liberated from centuries of Ottoman rule.

In the 19th century Aigio was renowned for its currants, which for a period were Greece’s main export. The Vostizza currants, which get their name from the way westerners rendered Vostitsa, the city’s pre-independence Slavic name, remain a well-known, quality brand, even if production around Aigio is much less than it was two centuries ago.

The seafront is dotted with the old warehouses used to store goods that came here for export on ships from as far as Galaxidi, on the other side of the gulf, and the mountains of the Peloponnese. Nowadays they host small bars and restaurants, which make for an ideal evening on the promenade, which leads to the famous Panagia Trypiti church, which is perched on a steep cliff.

“ I try to imagine the big fleets of the past, picture the knights riding their horses and envisage the ladies of ancient times walking the same shores.”
Personally, I love to walk along the pebbly beaches. Sitting on a rock while watching the sun go down over the mountains, I try to imagine the big fleets of the past, picture the knights riding their horses and envisage the ladies of ancient times walking the same shores. Throwing a pebble into the water is not just something I love; it is my way of showing that everyone can enjoy the seaside. The water is clear, although a little colder than the Mediterranean, but that also means it is less salty.

This is out little piece of paradise, where life, far from the globalized industrial world, is still comfortable and original. It is a small spot where humans have remained human, even during the crisis.
