Whatever your plans for Good Friday in Athens, don't miss the Epitaphios procession.🌸✝
Flower-decorated biers (each representing the body of Christ after he was brought down from the cross) are carried on the shoulders of men through every street in Athens. Bells toll in a mournful cadence as crowds, holding lit candles, follow the Epitaphios. All part of perhaps the most sorrowful day in Orthodox Christianity.
But why attend such a gloomy occasion, you may ask? Because apart from experiencing what is an essential communal event for Greeks, you’ll also discover that the Epitaphios is a perfect example of how reverence, beauty and, above all, appreciation for life prevail.
Our celebrated podcast has just the episode for this, trust us. Take a listen 👉 https://lnkfi.re/athensunpacked_ep7
