1)Lady Lent
Forty days, that's how long Christ fasted in the desert. 'Lady Lent' was his diary. They wouldn't put a mouth on her because she was always fasting and her hands were crossed because she was always praying. She had seven legs, the seven weeks of Lent. Every Sabbath they cut off a leg. The last one was cut off on Holy Saturday.
2) Lazarus
The Saturday before Holy Week, people celebrate the 'Revival' of Christs’ friend. To depict the Resurrection of Lazarus, to symbolize the Victory of Christ over death, but also to signify the resurrection of nature, they made an effigy of Lazarus.
3)The wagya
On Palm Sunday, in commemoration of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, all churches are decorated with branches of banya, palm trees or other victorious plants, laurel, willow, myrtle and olive.
After the service they are distributed to the faithful.
4)Easter Buns
The customs of Holy Week started mainly on Maundy Thursday. Early in the morning all over Greece women knead the Lambris buns and decorate them with nuts.
The red eggs
Some believe that the eggs are dyed red in remembrance of the blood of Christ. But red is the colour of joy. The colors for the eggs were made from various plants. The first egg they painted was the Virgin Mary's and they put it on the iconostasis. With it, the children were crucified from the evil eye.
5)Epitaph
Good Friday is a holiday and a day of fasting. It is a day of mourning. Many drink vinegar for the love of Christ. Near noon the girls decorate the Epitaph with spring flowers: violets, roses, and melissa. They make wreaths and garlands while chanting the dirge of the Virgin Mary.
6)The Resurrection
At dawn on Holy Saturday the churches are decorated with laurel leaves and the priest scatters them as soon as he says 'Anastas, God is judging the earth'.
On the evening of Holy Saturday , the faithful put on their brand new clothes, take their white candles to light them with the Holy Light and go to attend the Resurrection service. On returning from the Resurrection they cross the top of the front door with the Holy Light.
At noon on Easter Sunday the Second Resurrection, 'the Love', takes place.
