National Geographic has named Crete the world’s top gastronomy destination for 2026, highlighting the island’s deep connection to the Mediterranean Diet and its longstanding food traditions.
Compiled by National Geographic’s global writers and editors, the Best of the World Food list features 15 international destinations for food lovers eager to explore new culinary experiences.
Editors highlighted Crete’s recent distinction as the European Region of Gastronomy, describing the island as a key inspiration behind the Mediterranean Diet. The publication praised Crete’s deep-rooted food culture, where cuisine is closely tied to tradition, hospitality and wellbeing.

From the wineries around Heraklion and the mountain villages of Sfakia to traditional tavernas in Chania, the island continues to blend authentic local flavours with modern dining experiences. Centred on olive oil, seasonal produce, legumes and local cheeses, Cretan cuisine has long been associated with healthy living and longevity.

Tripadvisor Awards: Crete Beaches Among Europe’s and the World’s Best! Two beaches in Crete have been ranked among the best in the world and Europe at Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travellers’ Choice Awards, earning praise for their crystal-clear waters and natural beauty.

The Travellers’ Choice Awards recognise users’ favourite destinations, hotels, restaurants and things to do, based on reviews and opinions submitted worldwide on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period.

“For many travellers, the beach is the main event,” said Laurel Greatrix, chief communications officer at Tripadvisor. “Based on millions of trips, reviews and opinions, these awards highlight the very best beaches in the world — making it easier to decide where to go and how to spend your time once you’re there.” CRETAN shores dominate the rankings, with ELAFONISSI BEACH placed second worldwide among the Best of the Best Beaches and topping the European list, thanks to its distinctive pink sand and turquoise waters.

BALOS LAGOON ranks third globally and second in Europe, known for its soft white sand and semi-secluded setting. Falassarna follows in 11th place worldwide and fifth in Europe, drawing visitors with its expansive views and relaxed atmosphere.
