From our gardens to your table🌿! Meet Dimitris Andrianakis, one of our gardeners at Village Heights Resort and a Phāea Farmer, whose relationship with the Cretan land lies at the heart of this story.

Since joining the Phāea Farmers Program in 2019, Dimitris has cultivated olive oil and fresh produce while continuing to deepen his knowledge of organic and regenerative farming practices. Through the programme, PHĀEA team members who also cultivate their own land, alongside local producers, receive practical training and guidance in collaboration with professors and researchers from the School of Agricultural Sciences at the Hellenic Mediterranean University.

Filmed in the organic gardens surrounding our traditional stone-built Mitato, this short film explores how thoughtful cultivation can help restore the natural balance of the land, from supporting beneficial insects to growing vegetables alongside aromatic and flowering plants.

It is a story about the people behind what we grow, the knowledge passed on through the land, and the journey from Cretan soil to our guests’ tables

Some of the most meaningful places begin as traditions.
For centuries, the Mitato was the seasonal shelter of Cretan shepherds, built entirely by hand from locally gathered stone using traditional dry-stone masonry. More than a place to rest, it was where milk from their flocks was transformed into artisan cheeses during the grazing season, preserving a way of life deeply connected to Crete’s mountains, people, and land.

Today, this remarkable piece of Cretan heritage has been thoughtfully reimagined at Village Heights Resort as a place where tradition continues to thrive. Surrounded by our organic gardens, the Mitato now hosts experiences that celebrate the island’s culture through all the senses from cooking classes, local w**e and artisan cheese tastings to yoga sessions, private dining, celebrations, and guided tours of the gardens that supply many of the fresh herbs and seasonal produce enjoyed across the resort.

The Mitato is a living tribute to Cretan craftsmanship, gastronomy, and the enduring relationship between people and nature.
