A Birthday Rooted in Mathraki

Some birthdays are celebrated with a gift.
Others leave something behind that continues to grow.

During Jakob & Julia’s visit to Mathraki, Jakob celebrated his birthday in a very special way—by becoming the steward of one of our majestic olive trees.

They chose this tree not simply as a memory of a birthday or a beautiful day on a Greek island, but to honor something much greater:

the never-ending responsibility of stewardship toward nature.

An olive tree feels especially fitting.

It was here long before us.
It asks for care rather than ownership.
And, when cared for properly, it will continue giving long after we are gone.

From now on, this tree will carry Jakob & Julia’s names and the memory of the day they spent here on Mathraki—a living reminder that our relationship with nature is not about what we can take from it, but what we choose to protect and pass forward.

Happy Birthday, Jakob — and welcome Jakob & Julia to our growing family of Mathraki Olive Tree Stewards.

May you return one day to stand beneath its branches again and see how much you have all grown. 💚

🌿🇺🇸 An Olive Tree Connects Mathraki to the Harris Family in America

Not every connection to Mathraki begins with a visit.

Sometimes, the story begins thousands of kilometers away.

We are delighted to welcome the Harris Family from the United States as new Mathraki Olive Tree Stewards — and their story is a particularly special one.

Mark had never visited Mathraki.

As a former chef with a passion for food, nutrition and knowing where ingredients actually come from, Mark began researching olive-tree stewardship programs in Europe. His search eventually brought him to Greece…and then to our little island of Mathraki. 🇬🇷

What resonated with him wasn’t simply the idea of receiving olive oil.

It was the opportunity to know the island, the grove, the tree and the people behind the oil his family will put on their table.

From their home in the United States, the Harris Family chose one of our old Lianolia olive trees on Mathraki and became its stewards. 🌿

Their personalized plaque will be placed on their tree here in the grove, and following our harvest, 4 liters of Mathraki extra virgin olive oil will make the journey from our grove to their family in America. 🫒🇺🇸

Mark also gave us something valuable in return: a new perspective on our own program.

He reminded us that stewardship isn’t only about preserving an old olive tree.

It’s also about transparency and connection.

🌿 Know where your olive oil comes from.

The Harris Family hasn’t made it to Mathraki yet.

But a little piece of their family is already here waiting for them.

And hopefully one day, Mark, his wife and their two sons will stand beneath the branches of the tree they first chose from thousands of kilometers away.

🌱Three trees. One beautiful family story.

Meet Sharon and Jim from the USA — a remarkable couple who arrived on Mathraki almost by chance, booking a last-minute stay with us.

They came for four nights.

They stayed for six. 🤍

And somewhere between those extra days, long conversations, shared meals, adventures and quiet moments, they became much more than guests.

Sharon and Jim chose three olive trees through our Stewardship Program.

One for themselves.

And two more as gifts for their children and their families.

What a meaningful gift. 🌳🌳🌳

Not something that simply sits on a shelf or gets wrapped in paper, but something alive — rooted in Mathraki, growing through the years, and carrying a little piece of their family’s story with it.

Sharon and Jim are one of those couples who leave an impression.

Full of energy, curiosity and wisdom. Truly caring for each other, supporting one another, and embracing every adventure together. We found ourselves thinking:

“We hope we’ll be like you when we grow up.” 😊

We will always remember our deep conversations about life passing by, about growing older, and about how to keep ourselves young in our hearts and minds when the body eventually asks us to slow down.

There was so much wisdom in those conversations.

And so much joy.

Saying goodbye after those six days was genuinely moving. So we didn’t say goodbye.

We said:

“See you soon, Sharon and Jim.” 🤍

Your magnificent olive trees will be here waiting patiently for your return — and so will the homemade brownies. 🍫🌿

And we would absolutely love to meet the family members who received the other two trees as their gifts. We hope one day they will come to Mathraki, meet their trees, and understand just how special the gift their parents chose for them really is.

Because this is what our Stewardship Olive Tree Adoption Program is about.

It is about roots.
It is about family.
It is about memories that keep growing.
And sometimes, it is about the unexpected people who teach us something simply by living their lives the way they do.

They came as visitors.
They left as life teachers. 🌿🤍

🍃Some trees become part of your story. Some become part of your family.

Meet Ian and Genne from Manchester, UK — a truly genuine couple with big hearts, curious minds, and an appreciation for every precious moment spent on Mathraki.

For their Stewardship Olive Tree, they chose a very special one: a 200-year-old olive tree overlooking the sea. 🌊🌳

They chose it with a beautiful intention — for their tree to keep an eye on them while they are overseas, patiently watching the horizon until they return.

And somehow, it feels perfectly fitting.

Ian and Genne are lovers of travel, adventure, good food and, above all, good conversations. They embraced every moment on the island — from discovering quality local food to endless conversations, from keeping up with their exercise routines to facing life’s obstacles with the kind of determination that makes them truly unstoppable.

They didn’t just visit Mathraki.
They experienced it.

They slowed down. They connected. They laughed. They shared. And somewhere along the way, a friendship grew.

Now, whenever they look back towards Greece, there is a 200-year-old olive tree looking back at them too — standing quietly above the sea, waiting patiently for their return. 🤍

And we’ll be waiting too.

Meet Davy and An, a wonderful couple from Belgium who found a deep connection with our little island of Mathraki.

They came here to escape the noise and rhythm of city life. But during their stay, something beautiful happened — they became part of our community.

They helped with everyday island tasks, created new hiking paths, welcomed and connected with new guests, and even led others into the experiences they had discovered themselves. Little by little, they stopped simply being visitors… and became part of the life of Mathraki.

For their olive tree, they chose one of the trees standing at the main entrance to Nisaki Mathraki — an olive tree that welcomes every guest as they cross the threshold.

A perfect choice.

Because, just like this tree, Davy and A became guides and welcoming faces for others arriving on the island. 🌳

Their tree will stand there as a living reminder of their time with us, their contribution, and the friendship that grew from their stay.

This is what our Stewardship Olive Tree Adoption Program is all about.

Not simply adopting a tree.

But putting down a little root of your own in Mathraki.
Caring for something that belongs to this place.

🌿 From Visitors, to Olive Tree Stewards… to Future Mathraki Residents! 🇷🇴🇬🇷

On August 28th, we welcomed Cosmin, Alina & Vladimir from Romania as new Mathraki Olive Tree Stewards.

But their story with our island doesn’t end there.

They are also future residents of Mathraki. 💚

Together, they chose an old Lianolia olive tree that has been growing on our island for generations. And now, as they begin a new chapter that will bring their family even closer to Mathraki, their tree becomes something more—a living symbol of putting down roots on the island.

There is something especially meaningful about young Vladimir standing beside a tree that was here long before all of us and, we hope, will still be here as he grows up on Mathraki. 🌿

This is exactly the kind of connection we hoped our Olive Tree Stewardship Program would create.

It’s not simply about adopting an olive tree. It’s about belonging, preserving our heritage, bringing new life to our island, and connecting one generation to the next.

🌿 Another Olive Tree Has Found Its Stewards 🌿

On August 29th, we had the pleasure of welcoming Veronika & Jakub from the Czech Republic 🇨🇿 to our growing family of Mathraki Olive Tree Stewards.

They chose this beautiful old Lianolia olive tree—a tree that has stood on Mathraki for generations and will now carry their names and their connection to our island.

This is what our Olive Tree Stewardship Program is really about.

Not simply adopting a tree, but creating a reason to remain connected to Mathraki long after your visit has ended. Each stewardship helps us continue caring for our traditional olive grove while preserving a small piece of the island’s agricultural heritage for the generations that follow.

And each year, when the olives are harvested and the oil is produced, our stewards get to take a little piece of Mathraki home with them. 🫒
