On Paxos, the harbour isn’t a view so much as a threshold.

A lane of stone, a line of shade, then the water opens out, pale and clear, almost without sound apart from the gentle lap against the harbour wall. Tables are set with no urgency.

Lunch is whatever suits the hour: coffee first, then something grilled, then a reason to stay a little longer. Conversation runs beyond the meal. Boats sit quietly at anchor, the hills across the water softened by the early afternoon haze.

Today, Saturday 24th May 2025, beneath the evening sky at the historic Temple of St George, we are honoured to support The Durrell Suite, a concert celebrating 100 years since the birth of Gerald Durrell, the beloved writer and conservationist whose deep love for Corfu helped share its magic with the world.

Originally composed by Derek Lawrence to mark the 50th anniversary of Jersey Zoo and first performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, this moving composition returns to Corfu, the island that inspired it. The Durrell Suite will be brought to life by the Palaia Philharmonic Society and the St Spyridon Choir, conducted by Alkis Baltas, with choral direction by Christina Kalliaridou. The music captures Durrell’s deep connection to Corfu and the joyful, formative years he spent here, years that shaped a lifelong mission to protect the natural world.

From his early fascination with Corfu’s wildlife to founding the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Gerald Durrell’s legacy continues to inspire global efforts in biodiversity and species preservation. This concert honours his vital role in shaping modern conservation.
