Corfu town in the 1900s

Πριν 125 χρόνια. Μια καθημερινή σκηνή στη Κέρκυρα του 1900

Οι πρωινές αχτίδες του ήλιου χτυπούν τις στενές, βενετσιάνικες οδούς, φωτίζοντας το τέλος της οδού Μιχαήλ Θεοτόκη.. Μια αυξημένη κίνηση γεμίζει τον αέρα με έναν ορυμαγδό ήχων και μια πολύμορφη εικόνα: καπέλα της αστικής τάξης και φτωχικά μαντήλια, ακριβά υφάσματα και τσαλακωμένες ποδιές αναμειγνύονται, αντανακλώντας τις έντονες κοινωνικές αντιθέσεις του νησιού. Η φασαρία των μικροπωλητών, που διαλαλούν την πραμάτεια τους με δυνατές φωνές, σμίγει με τη χαρακτηριστική, μελωδική διάλεκτο ενός καραβοκύρη που ίσως έχει μόλις αγκυροβολήσει από κάποιο κοντινό νησί, φέρνοντας μαζί του τις ιστορίες και τις μυρωδιές της θάλασσας.

Δύο άνδρες, με σκούρα ρούχα που προδίδουν μια μικροαστική αξιοπρέπεια, συζητούν εγκάρδια μπροστά σε έναν πάγκο φορτωμένο με φρέσκα λαχανικά και φρούτα. Η συζήτησή τους, ίσως για τις τελευταίες πολιτικές εξελίξεις στην Αθήνα ή για την επίδραση του Γεωργίου Θεοτόκη, του Κερκυραίου πρωθυπουργού στην τοπική πολιτική, επισκιάζεται από τη μυρωδιά της φρεσκάδας. Πιθανότατα να συζητούν για τις πολιτικές του Θεοτόκη σχετικά με το αγροτικό ζήτημα, ένα από τα πιο φλέγοντα θέματα στην Κέρκυρα μετά την ένωση με την Ελλάδα.

Ακριβώς απέναντι, η εικόνα είναι διαφορετική. Από την είσοδο ενός κρεοπωλείου κρέμονται σφαχτά και καλοδιατηρημένα λουκάνικα, εκτεθειμένα στον πρωινό ήλιο χωρίς καμία προστασία. Μια βαριά, δυσάρεστη μυρωδιά αιωρείται γύρω τους, αλλά οι περαστικοί, συνηθισμένοι σε τέτοια θεάματα, προσπερνούν αδιάφοροι με βιαστικά βήματα. Αυτή η εικόνα της ανοιχτής πώλησης κρέατος, χωρίς τις σημερινές υγειονομικές προφυλάξεις, μαρτυρά την ωμή, σκληρή πραγματικότητα της εποχής για τις κατώτερες τάξεις, που ζούσαν σε συνθήκες πολύ διαφορετικές από τις παλιές αριστοκρατικές οικογένειες.

Σε περίοπτη θέση, μία οβάλ πινακίδα ξεχωρίζει: «Καπνοπωλείο Αδελφών Νικολάκη, ιδρυθέν το 1886». Το παλιό μέταλλο και τα ξεθωριασμένα χρώματα της πινακίδας θυμίζουν το πέρασμα του χρόνου, αλλά η παρουσία της παραμένει σταθερή μέσα στην κίνηση της καθημερινής ζωής, υπενθυμίζοντας μια από τις σημαντικότερες οικονομικές δραστηριότητες του νησιού. Η βιομηχανία καπνού στην Κέρκυρα, άλλωστε, είχε σημαντική ανάπτυξη μετά την ένωση με την Ελλάδα, σε μια εποχή που η τοπική οικονομία προσπαθούσε να ανακάμψει από την απώλεια της πρωτοκαθεδρίας της ως πρωτεύουσα του Ιονίου Κράτους.

🥗✨ A Greek Salad with a Twist! ✨🥗
After yesterday’s roasted lamb indulgence, we were craving something lighter — yet still full of character and bold flavor.

Today’s refreshing salad brings together the best of Greek summer produce, with a subtle Levantine twist:

🍅 Two kinds of tomatoes — one from our nearby greenhouse, the other a classic long variety from the local supermarket
🍅 Sweet red and green cherry tomatoes (greenhouse-grown)
🌶️ One sweet red pepper, also from the greenhouse
🥒 One crisp cucumber
🫒 A mix of 5 Kalamata olives and 5 green Palestinian olives
🧀 Three generous slices of white Kefalonian cheese (70% sheep’s milk, 30% goat’s milk)
🌿 A rich drizzle of our own Koroneiko olive oil
🥄 A dash of balsamic vinegar for just the right tang
🧅 Finished with baby onions and a fragrant Palestinian herb blend — with oregano and thyme for that unexpected lift

Simple, colorful, very juicy, and deeply satisfying — the kind of dish we love to enjoy and share here at Thalassa Garden.
