Six Rooms, Six Lives — The Vikelas Room

Some names change history quietly, from a room, not a stage.

Demetrios Vikelas was born in Hermoupolis in 1835. Decades later, in Paris in 1894, he helped revive the Olympic Games and became the first President of the International Olympic Committee — a role that began with a childhood on this small Greek island.

Palazzo Santa Maria named one of its rooms in his honor. Inside, the furniture carries its own past too, with pieces once used by Maria Callas and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

His roots trace back to this island, even if his path started elsewhere.

Georgios Printezis, of Syros heritage, went on to become one of the most decorated players in European basketball — carrying the island's name with him to the biggest stages in the sport.

At Palazzo Santa Maria, one room carries his name in his honor. A tribute from the island his family calls home.

Inside, the furniture holds its own history too — pieces once used by figures like Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando.

Some rooms are named for the family that built this house. This one is named for a woman who was never part of it — and stayed anyway.

Sarah Bernhardt, the legendary French actress, married Aristidis Damalas — son of Hermoupolis's own mayor — in 1882, and returned to Syros with him more than once.

Her suite carries the mansion's original frescoes, two centuries old, and a chair that once held Marlon Brando. The Frescoes Suite.

Before the Olympics were modern, they needed someone to make the first move.
Dimitrios Vikelas, born in Hermoupolis in 1835, became the first president of the International Olympic Committee in 1894 — the man who helped revive a Games that had been dormant for over a thousand years.

His room keeps the mansion's original frescoes intact above the cornice, a chair Frank Sinatra once sat in by the window, and another that once held Ingrid Bergman.

Not every name in this house belongs to the nineteenth century.

Georgios Printezis was born on Syros in 1985 and went on to win back-to-back EuroLeague titles with Olympiacos, in 2012 and 2013 — one of the island's own, and one of its more recent stories.

His room holds a quiet sitting corner made for watching the light change over the Aegean, and a chair actor Anthony Quinn once sat in. Two very different kinds of fame, under one roof.

Tonight, Syros welcomes one of the world’s great organists.

Olivier Latry, titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, opens the 10th ANO International Organ Festival at the Cathedral of Agios Georgios in Ano Syros.

We are delighted to have him as our guest at Palazzo Santa Maria during his stay on the island, as Syros celebrates an evening where music, history and place come together.
