Syros as seen by the
New York Times
The neoclassical beauty Syros may be home to the capital of the Cyclades but it’s largely overlooked by most cruise ships, which drop anchor in nearby Mykonos instead. The island, previously inhabited by Romans, Ottomans and Venetians, has a main town, Ermoupoli, which is an elegant time capsule of cobbled streets, marble squares, wooden shutters, and pastel-coloured villas clustered around the port. Visit the imposing blue and yellow church of St Nicholas or stroll through the town’s own Little Venice, with its waterfront cafés and steps leading straight into the sea for impromptu swims.
