Easter in Greece 🎉

We will be celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter on April 20th this year! (1 month away!) Many people choose Santorini to celebrate Easter because of all the interesting traditions and especially in the village of Pyrgos.

Fun facts about Greek Easter ⛪️ 

Greek Easter is one week after the Catholic Easter

On Good Friday everyone on every village walk with Jesus coffin (this is called “epitaph” or “epitafios”

The best place to be on a Good Friday in Santorini is Pyrgos village, with fires all over the rooftops. The villagers prepare by lighting up thousands of aluminum cans, stuffed with flammable materials and placing them on every house, every rooftop, every church, every path, on the entire village, and on the Venetian castle, creating an unforgettable picture. 

As you approach the village from below, the view of the flickering torches is so spectacular that many visitors come from all over the island just to witness this event.

On Saturday night before Easter Sunday, everyone goes to the church before midnight and they all gather afterward for a pre-Easter meal. 

On Easter Sunday there is a BBQ of roast lamb.
