Kefalonia
There is a school of academic thought which says that Kefalonia – and not the smaller neighbour that bears the name – is the Ithaca of The Odyssey. It certainly looks the part; an Ionian Avalon that any wandering hero might seek. Fiskardo is a welcoming harbour; a blur of fluttering sails and evening cocktails. West-coast Assos is the Greek village as artform, gazing at Homer’s “wine-dark sea” in the shadow of a Venetian castle. And the Paliki peninsula is ragged and mysterious, ending on the sheltered sands of Petani Beach. All in all, a holiday paradise – well worth a decade of struggles with monsters and sirens.

Hi All,

Over the years, those of you who love Dolicha Villas as much as we do have become friends, many of you have become ‘huisvriende,’ a lovely South African term for close friends. We are thinking of you all.

Lesley, Luke and I are locked down in Cape Town, Andrew, Despoina and little Orestes are locked down in Fiskardo House.

Fiscardo is completely deserted and the sea bereft of ships, just like it was when Lesley and I first lived there 43 years ago. Andrew says the spring flowers are blooming, its breathtakingly beautiful and that they are lucky to have it all to themselves.

We keep a daily eye on corona events on the island and the good news is that is firmly under control, with only one corona case, a Swedish resident who somehow escaped quarantine.

The number one topic of conversation is when will paradise open its doors again and holidays’ get back to normal? Alas, neither we nor anyone else knows, although there are lots of people with strong opinions! Optimists says mid-May, pessimists say the end of June. One thing is for sure, we will be on one of the first planes in… Lesley is having grandchild withdrawal symptoms.

We will do our best to keep you informed, in the meantime stay safe, stay inside, be healthy and remember that when this is over the sun loungers at Dolicha Villas will be ready for you.
