20 things you should know before coming to Crete!
1.Crete is not easy place to see if it's your first time. Don't try to see everything during your first stay.
2. Pay attention for distance. A lot of guests have in mind "island" and not checking the hours of driving from one point to another.
3. Between every quite big towns on Crete the distance is 1 hour. So if you look on the map you can easy count that Agios Nikolaos-Chania =3 hours at least.
4. Don't look the km and miles. Look for a time it will take you.
5. If you are renting a car, before to go far to see some beach look the weather and a wind power exactly there. On Crete the weather is really different on South, West, East and North.
6. What is Crete about?
Nice beaches, archeological places, old monasteries, mountains villages, wineries, gastro places, fishing villages, gorges ( about 400), cosy towns, local taverns and MORE THAN EVERYTHING - wonderful people!
7. So, if you plan your day, try not to go only for one beach or one village. Make your itinerary to include villages to see, tavern to eat, wineries to drink, beach to swim and history sites to visit.
8. If you are in east part of Crete try to explore that part as much as possible. The same for the west and so on. Don't need to run for all touristic attractions.
9. For families with kids: Amazonas Park, Reptisland, Local Farms ( Kamihis for example) Water parks, Aquarium, Lake Kournas, Mythology park on plateuo Lassithi. Melodoni, Sfedoni, Zeus caves.
10. Don't be afraid to be lost. Local people with always help and by being lost you can discover sth beautifully or some tasty place or you can find friends for a life!
11.Diverse Climate: Crete experiences a varied climate. Coastal areas are generally mild, while inland areas and mountains can be cooler. Pack accordingly.
12.Local Currency: The official currency is the Euro (€). Ensure you have some cash for small purchases, but credit cards are widely accepted.
13.Language: Greek is the official language. While many locals in tourist areas speak English, it's helpful to learn a few basic Greek phrases.
14.Transportation: Renting a car is a great way to explore Crete, especially if you want to visit more remote areas. Public transportation options are also available.
15.Cretan Cuisine: Explore the local food scene. Try Cretan specialties like moussaka, dakos, and kalitsounia. Don't miss the opportunity to taste olive oil, cheese, and local wines.
16.Weather Considerations: Crete is busiest during the summer months. If you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting in the spring or fall.
17.Cultural Respect: Respect local customs and traditions. When visiting churches or monasteries, dress modestly. It's customary to greet people with a friendly "Kalimera" (Good morning).
18.Historical Sites: Crete is rich in history. Explore ancient ruins like Knossos Palace and historical sites such as the Arkadi Monastery. Consider hiring a guide for a deeper understanding.
19.Sun Protection: The sun in Crete can be strong, especially in the summer. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
20.Nature and Hiking: Crete offers diverse landscapes, from beaches to mountains. If you enjoy hiking, explore gorges like Samaria or Imbros, but check their status, as some may be closed during certain seasons.
