Did you know Greek salad in Greece isn’t actually called Greek salad?
In Greece, it’s called horiatiki salad, meaning “village salad,” and a traditional Greek horiatiki has absolutely NO lettuce.
A classic Greek horiatiki salad is made with tomatoes, cucumber, onion, peppers, Greek olives, feta cheese, extra virgin Greek olive oil and oregano. But like many dishes in traditional Greek cuisine, the recipe changes depending on which region of Greece you visit.
In Crete, you may find horiatiki served with local soft sheep’s or goat’s milk cheese instead of feta one of the many regional differences that make Cretan food and Greek cuisine so special.
And Greeks DO eat lettuce salad. It’s simply a different dish called maroulosalata.
