anana trees spreads to the east and, together with the location of the village up to the 35th parallel of latitude, contributed to the temperate climate of Myrtos, bearing a very mild winter of average temperature 12o C and the cool summer 30o C. This might be the reason that Myrtos is the only one place of the Mediterranean where swallows remain and settle during winter.

Dear friends and clients of Big Blue Studios,

I want to share with you a personal decision of mine, which is not only related to my own well-being but also to the future of Big Blue Studios. After many years of knowing you, I consider you more than my clients – you are truly my friends, and I want to keep you informed about every decision I make.

It was on June 17, 1990, when I, along with my parents Dimitra and Manolis, watched with great emotion as the lights illuminated the two-story building at the beginning of Big Blue for the first time. All together, we celebrated the completion of our small business, which had been built through enormous personal and financial struggles, including loans from friends and banks, as well as overcoming institutional challenges (we had to obtain approval from the Central Archaeological Council of Greece due to our proximity to the Roman antiquities).

However, despite these obstacles, Big Blue was ready – ready to embark on its journey in tourism, ready to welcome our first visitors, and ready to contribute to the development of Myrtos, as a beloved destination. Since then, many of you have returned year after year, and for that, we are truly grateful. You have become a member of our family, and it was our pleasure to welcome you to our beautiful village, with the sun, the sea, and the energy of Myrtos.

In 1994, we expanded with two more floors of new apartments and rooms. More recently, my brother Stelios started his own venture, the Big Blue Apartments, while my side of the business was named Big Blue Studios – both are housed in the same building.

Today, after 34 wonderful years, with mixed emotions I announce my decision to retire from the management of Big Blue Studios. I feel that it is time to dedicate more of my energy to myself and my family, so that I can enjoy a better quality of life and more peace and rest.

However, I am lucky to have found the perfect people to carry on the legacy of Big Blue Studios. Maria, a young woman from our village, and her husband Manos. They bring rich experience in tourism, Maria and her mother Evi manage the apartment rental unit Villa Aliki here in Myrto, and Manos also has experience from his work at the restaurant La Sera as well as Canova & Votsalo in the past years. Both share my commitment to preserving the values of traditional Cretan hospitality that you have come to know and love.

While I will no longer be at the helm, I will always be here and I look forward to seeing you again in Myrtos next year, and I hope the coming months bring you peace, health, and happiness.

Thank you from the depths of my heart for all your trust and friendship all these years.

Αγαπητοί φίλοι και πελάτες του big blue studios,

Θέλω να μοιραστώ μαζί σας μια προσωπική μου απόφαση, που δεν σχετίζεται μόνο με τη δική μου ευημερία αλλά και με το μέλλον της επιχείρησής μου, Big Blue Studios. Μετά από πολλά χρόνια γνωριμίας μαζί σας, σας θεωρώ κάτι περισσότερο από πελάτες μου – είστε πραγματικά φίλοι μου και θέλω να σας κρατήσω ενήμερους για κάθε μου απόφαση.

Ήταν στις 17 Ιουνίου 1990 που εγώ, μαζί με τους γονείς μου Δήμητρα και Μανώλη, παρακολουθούσαμε με μεγάλη συγκίνηση τα φώτα να φωτίζουν για πρώτη φορά το διώροφο στην αρχή Big Blue. Όλοι μαζί, γιορτάσαμε την ολοκλήρωση της μικρής μας επιχείρησης, η οποία είχε χτιστεί μέσα από τεράστιους προσωπικούς και οικονομικούς αγώνες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων δανείων από φίλους και τράπεζες, καθώς και την υπέρβαση θεσμικών προκλήσεων (έπρεπε να λάβουμε έγκριση από το Κεντρικό Αρχαιολογικό Συμβούλιο της Ελλάδας λόγω η γειτνίασή μας με τις ρωμαϊκές αρχαιότητες).

Όμως, παρά τα εμπόδια αυτά, το Big Blue ήταν έτοιμο – έτοιμο να ξεκινήσει το ταξίδι του στον τουρισμό, έτοιμο να υποδεχθεί τους πρώτους επισκέπτες μας και έτοιμο να συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη του Μύρτου ως αγαπημένου προορισμού. Από τότε, πολλοί από εσάς έχετε επιστρέψει χρόνο με τον χρόνο, και γι' αυτό, είμαστε πραγματικά ευγνώμονες. Γίνατε μέλος της οικογένειάς μας και ήταν χαρά μας να σας καλωσορίσουμε στο όμορφο χωριό μας, με τον ήλιο, τη θάλασσα και την ενέργεια του Μύρτου.

Το 1994, επεκταθήκαμε με δύο ακόμη ορόφους νέων διαμερισμάτων και δωματίων. Πιο πρόσφατα, ο αδερφός μου Στέλιος ξεκίνησε το δικό του εγχείρημα, τα Big Blue Apartments, ενώ η δική μου πλευρά της επιχείρησης ονομάστηκε Big Blue Studios – και τα δύο στεγάζονται στο ίδιο κτίριο.

Σήμερα, μετά από 34 υπέροχα χρόνια, με ανάμεικτα συναισθήματα ανακοινώνω την απόφασή μου να αποσυρθώ από τη διαχείριση των Big Blue Studios. Νιώθω ότι είναι καιρός να αφιερώσω περισσότερη από την ενέργειά μου στον εαυτό μου και την οικογένειά μου, ώστε να απολαμβάνω καλύτερη ποιότητα ζωής και περισσότερη ηρεμία και ξεκούραση.

Ωστόσο, είμαι τυχερός που βρήκα τους τέλειους ανθρώπους για να συνεχίσουν την κληρονομιά των Big Blue Studios. Η Μαρία, μια νέα γυναίκα από το χωριό μας και ο σύζυγός της Μάνος, συμφωνήσαμε να αναλάβουν τη διαχείριση. Φέρνουν πλούσια εμπειρία στον τουρισμό. Η Μαρία με τη μητέρα της Εύη διαχειρίζονται τη μονάδα ενοικίασης διαμερισμάτων Villa Aliki εδώ στον Μύρτο και ο Μάνος έχει επίσης εμπειρία από την εργασία του στο εστιατόριο La Sera καθώς και το Canova & Votsalo τα περασμένα χρόνια. Και οι δύο συμμερίζονται τη δέσμευσή μου για τη διατήρηση των αξιών της παραδοσιακής κρητικής φιλοξενίας που έχετε γνωρίσει και αγαπήσει.

Ενώ δεν θα είμαι πλέον στο τιμόνι, θα είμαι πάντα εδώ και ανυπομονώ να σας ξαναδώ στον Μύρτο του χρόνου. Ελπίζω οι επόμενοι μήνες να σας φέρουν ειρήνη, υγεία και ευτυχία.

Our Story

The big blue is located on the west end of the beautiful Cretan village of Myrtos, above the beach. Next to the building are monuments to a Roman villa and bath, which are visible but have not yet been excavated. Nearby are restaurants and taverns, village bakery, supermarket, butcher, deliacatesen shop and some nice traditional cafes. Minoan settlement Pyrgos at 1 km, Minoan settlement Fournos Top at 2 km, arched stone bridge of the cold river built in 1884, at 5 km the famous Sarakina gorge and at 20 km the largest pine forest Selakano. Ierapetra, the fourth largest city in Crete, is at 14 km, with a rich market and a large bazaar every Saturday. From Ierapetra the boats to the paradise island of Chryssi depart daily.

big BLUE is just 50m from the beach. It has 5 rooms of all categories. In 2019 there was a general renovation of the building and in 2017 there was a general renovation of the bathrooms. All rooms have free WIFI access, A / C and sea-view balconies with pergola & parasol seats and a table. The 3 rooms on the 4th floor have an open plan entrance. The big BLUE Complies with all GREEN KEY eco-certification specifications. The area is completely safe, the building has a beautiful garden where children can stay safe, the sea is just 50 meters away and has lifeguards and lifeguards from the PADI diving school with beach facilities.

Pavlos Daskalakis is the owner and creator of Big BLUE (1990). Today he is a retired, educated person. He has extensive experience in environmental education of students and citizens. He was the Director of the Lasithi Environmental Education Center. Today it is developing social and ecological content actions. He is a member of the Social Co-operative Society EPASTIKTOS. He has undertaken the program of sustainable management of ancient olive trees in Crete. It has so far recorded some 300 olive trees of average age 1830 years.
