Spring 2026 motorbike tour northern Greece continued:
We spent the next day exploring Sithonia, the middle leg of Halkidiki. What a stunning part of the world. Crystal clear blue water, pine clad hills, olive tree plantations, empty roads lined with yellow broom. A very lush and green and undeveloped peninsula.
The eastern side is dominated by views across to Mount Athos on the 3rd peninsula. We found the old town at Nikiti - the nearest town to where we were staying - the church wasn’t open but I managed a sneaky photo of the treasure inside through a tiny pane of clear glass in the door!
We avoided the first peninsula of the 3, Cassandra, as by all accounts it is very developed and commercial. However we did spend a fruitless 2 hours on a ‘wild flamingo chase’ at the top of Cassandra. We eventually saw the flamingos but they were so far away, there was little point! 🙄
The next day we rode as far as you can get on to Athos. The road stops at Ouranoupouli, a small pretty village with many jewellery shops and tavernas. I guess a popular place to day trip to. From Ouranoupouli men with permits can continue by boat to the many monasteries. Women are forbidden within 500m of the coast!
The ride to and from Athos back to Sithonia was truly stunning. The land here is even more green and fertile.
After 3 nights based on Sithonia, our journey continued east to Kavala, just 120miles from the Turkish border. Again it was a terrific ride through fertile, green hills, and oak forests with empty roads.
The arrival into Kavala was a little too ‘exciting’! The satnav took us down a warren of almost vertical, tiny alley ways, with uneven paving, which is not funny on a big touring motorbike. Had I not been so scared, then I could have taken some great photos! We somehow survived! Well done to Nick!! 😍. Final photo is the view from our accommodation in Kavala.
Next adventure in Kavala to be continued….
