Good news! The Greek Embassy in London has confirmed that, as of 10 April 2026, British passport holders are exempt from EES biometric registration at Greek border crossing points.
This means no fingerprints, no facial image, and no kiosk enrolment when entering Greece on a UK passport.
This is a Greek national operational decision made under the flexibility allowed during the EES rollout. It applies only when entering Greece, and only to British passport holders. If you travel via another Schengen country (e.g., France, Germany, Italy, Spain), you may still be required to complete full EES biometrics there.
The exemption does not change the 90/180‑day rule, passport stamping, or any other entry requirements. It simply removes the biometric‑capture step at Greek borders.

Takeaway:
Greece is highly likely to extend this exemption through the 2026 summer season, because reversing it would create operational chaos they cannot absorb.
Why extension is the most realistic path
- Greece depends heavily on UK tourism — the UK is consistently the largest inbound market. Any disruption that causes 3‑hour queues or missed flights is politically and economically unacceptable.
- Regional airports (Chania, Heraklion, Rhodes, Kos, Corfu, Zakynthos) cannot physically process biometric capture for UK volumes. They were not built for it.
- The EU allows temporary suspension of biometric capture for operational reasons. Greece is using this flexibility exactly as intended.
- No political incentive to reverse it — the exemption costs Greece nothing and prevents a meltdown. https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/greece-eu-entry-exit-system-ees-biometrics-british-travellers-b2960369.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawRRWblleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeWi4bEDVbmGdIjFAjgxXyYGKcpIOuaLnSZDy9ue_htnM1wnO4EYof_9FZPek_aem_yG1Q8UsK69TDQthCDcI29g
