Οι Έλληνες ήταν ο πρώτος λαός που καλλιέργησε ελιές στον ευρωπαϊκό χώρο της Μεσογείου. Η ελιά συντρόφεψε τους Έλληνες τόσο σε εποχές ευμάρειας , όσο και σε εποχές στέρησης . Οι καρποί της ελιάς , το λάδι της, αλλά και τα κλαδιά της , χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στο εμπόριο, έθρεψαν και μεγάλωσαν υγιεινά γενιές και γενιές, πρόσφεραν μακροζωία και προστασία από διάφορες αρρώστιες. Η Ελιά για τους Έλληνες είναι ένα ευλογημένο δέντρο , ένα πολύτιμο δώρο της φύσης που έχει συνδεθεί με την ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό της Ελλάδος. Ο καρπός της ελιάς ήταν ιερός από την αρχαιότητα.
