Have you ever wondered why windmills form part of the Mykonos skyline?

The Venetians built them during the 16th century. These windmills played a crucial role in grain production, taking advantage of Mykonos’ winds along major trade routes. As times changed and grain production declined, Mykonos became a vibrant tourism hub.

The windmills are around a 15 to 18-minute walk from the villa. These iconic structures hold personal significance for me, resonating in various ways.

I love the rich history and architectural beauty they encompass, offering an awe-inspiring sight. The breathtaking views they provide never fail to take my breath away.

Being in their presence brings a soothing sense of tranquility, a break from the usual hustle. Moreover, they offer a unique link to the local culture and traditions of Mykonos.

Today, these 16 restored windmills stand tall, reminding us of Mykonos’ past. Some have found new life as homes or spaces dedicated to preserving the island’s history.

Apart from the fantastic scenery, food, and nightlife, there is much to learn while you visit the island.
