Peirene served as a source of water in classical Corinth through the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, with more being added to the structure and facade over time. It became hidden in the middle ages until it was rediscovered by the in 1896. The school began excavations but many who worked on the fountain became sick with typhoid and malaria from its water.
