Rising majestically from the Cretan Sea, Thodorou Island (also known as Agioi Theodoroi) stands like a silent guardian off the coast of Platanias. This mysterious isle holds centuries of stories within its rocky shores – from ancient Greek legends that say it's actually a petrified monster (look closely at that cave on the western side – they say it's the monster's mouth!) to its vital role as a sanctuary for some of Crete's most precious wildlife.

Today, this uninhabited natural park is home to a thriving community of Kri-kri, Crete's beloved wild goats, whose ancestors were brought here as just a trio in 1935. The island also provides a safe haven for elegant Eleonora's falcons, who soar above its twin Venetian fortresses built in 1583.

While Thodorou remains closed to visitors most of the year, opening its shores only on Saint Theodore's Day (June 8th), its silhouette against the Mediterranean sky reminds us daily of Crete's rich tapestry of myth, history, and natural wonder. A single guardian tends to this protected paradise, continuing an ancient tradition of stewardship that stretches back to when the island was sacred to the goddess Artemis herself.

We are now retiring. If you want to come and stay and the room is empty it's yours. But you clean up yourself and make your own bed, empty your own bins and provide your own tea and coffee etc. We enjoyed doing our hosting but we're doing our own thing from now on. If you've been before and enjoyed your time come again. But call me on 0030-694-639-8883 beforehand. Thanks for staying with us and keeping our heads above water. It was a pleasure to have met you all. Xx Julie and Terry.

As you know we are retiring at the end of this month. But had to share recent reviews because they fully state that we have achieved our objectives with the guest house. So we're giving ourselves a pat on the back. We don't do it often but as we're slowing down I want to thank anyone who's stayed and enjoyed our place and our company. You are welcome back at any time to use the rooms. Until we sell. Then we'll still have a spare room but it'll be like living en famille rather than a guest house experience. But there's no charge for doing it. Just leave the room as clean and tidy as you found it and pay a few euros to our cleaning lady so we can get bed and towels laundered. Because we aren't doing anything apart from giving you a key and having a beer in the garden with you. So come anytime. Just call me so I can tell you if rooms booked or not. So happy retirement to us and see you soon. X

A Cretan’s heart is as vast as the land they cherish. 💙 Hardworking, proud, and deeply rooted in tradition, Cretans carry the spirit of their ancestors, fiercely independent yet endlessly generous. They don’t just offer food; they share a piece of their soul, their hospitality a testament to the island’s timeless values. To know a Cretan is to know what true strength, kindness, and resilience look like.🙏 THIS IS CRETE! 🇬🇷

New visitor. No charge.

Morning everyone. At the end of September we are closing for our retirement. So thank you for your support. The rooms are still here until we sell the house. So if you want to buy a small holiday apartment with 2 bedrooms a lounge, a balcony and 2 bathrooms contact me. One of the bathrooms can be converted into a kitchen and there's a staircase to the upstairs room. We'll still be living in the other part of the house as we want to stay in the village. We didn't put a kitchen in the downstairs apartment because we wanted people to use the local tavernas to help the village.
So we can sell the apartments separately, or the whole house.
But we'll of course still be around to help with you getting settled and helping anyone who wants to come over to stay at your holiday place. If you still want to visit just call me and if nobody is using the rooms you can.
No charge for the rooms, but you clean up after yourself and respect the offer we've made. We can find you a cleaner to help but we're not arranging bookings, writing reviews, advertising the place, repairing damages, replacing linen, or hanging around for you to arrive or leave. We're retiring and you're welcome as friends, not customers. We'd rather the rooms were used and we like meeting people.
Also my Yorkshire tea cupboard needs refilling regularly so bring a present of tea and it will be gratefully accepted.
If you've stayed before you'll know that you can do pretty much what you want here. We've had BBQ s that lasted all over the weekend, Dropped people off if they'd no car, repaired scratches on cars, picked people up when they've run out of petrol, fed them for free, babysat their animals etc, but now we want to retire properly. However, thanks for being with us for the last 8 years.
We've met 2 obnoxious gits who aren't welcome back, but everyone else has been lovely and you're welcome back at any time. Call 0030-694-639-8883 if you want a visit after September.
Julie and Terry.
