🇬🇷 THE ULTIMATE 3-WEEK PELOPONNESE & ISLAND-HOPPING ROAD TRIP
What if you had three weeks to explore the Peloponnese - not rushing from attraction to attraction, but combining ancient sites, mountain villages, wild coastlines, beautiful towns and some island hopping along the way?
Here’s a road trip I’d happily do from start to finish. 🚗⛴️🌊
📍 ATHENS → CORINTHIA → NAFPLIO
Leave Athens and cross into the Peloponnese, stopping at the Corinth Canal and Ancient Corinth before continuing towards Nafplio.
Spend 2 nights in Nafplio, giving yourself time for the old town and Palamidi Fortress, with trips to Mycenae and Ancient Epidaurus.
🏔️ NAFPLIO → MOUNTAIN ARCADIA
Leave the coast behind and head into the mountains.
Spend 2 nights exploring Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and the Lousios Gorge, with stone villages, monasteries, forests and a completely different side of the Peloponnese.
🏛️ ARCADIA → MYSTRAS → MANI
Continue south via Mystras, one of the most important Byzantine sites in Greece, before heading towards the Mani Peninsula.
Base yourself around Areopoli or Limeni for 3 nights.
Explore Limeni, Areopoli, the Diros Caves, Gerolimenas, Vathia and the road all the way to Cape Tainaron, the southern tip of mainland Greece.
🏰 MANI → MONEMVASIA
Cross Laconia towards one of the most extraordinary places in the Peloponnese.
Spend 1 night in Monemvasia, preferably inside the medieval castle town itself.
Once the day visitors leave and evening settles over the stone lanes, Monemvasia becomes another place entirely.
🏖️ MONEMVASIA → ELAFONISOS
Continue south to Elafonisos for a day of turquoise water and the famous sands of Simos Beach.
Spend 1 night on Elafonisos or around Neapoli.
⛴️ NEAPOLI → KYTHIRA
Now the road trip becomes an island trip.
Take the ferry from Neapoli to Kythira and spend 3 nights exploring one of Greece’s most distinctive islands.
Discover Chora and Kapsali, Avlemonas, Mylopotamos, Potamos and beaches such as Kaladi, while leaving plenty of time simply to drive and explore.
🌊 KYTHIRA → MESSENIA
Return by ferry to Neapoli and begin the journey west towards Messenia.
Spend 3 nights between Kardamyli and the Pylos/Gialova area.
Explore the Mani coast around Kardamyli, then continue through Messenia towards Koroni, Methoni, Pylos, Gialova and Voidokilia Beach.
🏛️ MESSENIA → ANCIENT OLYMPIA
Follow the western coast north and spend 1 night around Ancient Olympia.
Walk through the birthplace of the Olympic Games and visit its archaeological museum before beginning the journey back across the Peloponnese.
🌲 OLYMPIA → INLAND PELOPONNESE → ARGOLIS
Instead of racing straight back to Athens, cross the interior of the peninsula and head towards the eastern coast.
And now comes the final chapter of the journey:
the Saronic Islands.
🌿 GALATAS → POROS
Drive to Galatas, park the car and take the short boat crossing across the narrow channel to Poros.
Spend 1 night on Poros, wandering around the waterfront and climbing through the town towards its famous Clock Tower.
The next day, take the boat back to Galatas and collect the car.
🚗 GALATAS → ERMIONI
Now continue along the beautiful eastern Peloponnese coast towards Ermioni.
This time, leave the car in Ermioni.
You won’t need it for the next part of the journey.
⛴️ ERMIONI → HYDRA
Take the ferry from Ermioni to Hydra.
No ordinary road traffic. No need for a car. Just stone mansions, narrow lanes, boats, waterfront cafés and walking paths disappearing along the coast.
Spend 2 nights on Hydra if possible.
Hydra deserves more than a quick day trip, particularly in the evening when the harbour becomes quieter and you can experience the island at a much slower pace.
⚓ HYDRA → SPETSES
From Hydra, continue by ferry to Spetses.
Spend 1–2 nights exploring Dapia, the Old Harbour, the island’s maritime history and its pine-covered coastline.
Walk, cycle, take a boat or simply slow down — after almost three weeks on the road, this is a wonderful place to finish.
⛴️ SPETSES → ERMIONI
And here is the important part:
you haven’t abandoned your car somewhere on the other side of the Saronic Gulf! 😄
Take the ferry from Spetses back to Ermioni, where you left the car.
🚗 ERMIONI → ATHENS
Collect the car and make the final drive back to Athens.
And that’s the end of the journey.
Three weeks taking you through:
📍 Corinthia
📍 Nafplio
📍 Mycenae & Epidaurus
📍 Mountain Arcadia
