The Traditional Cuisine of Crete is is distinguished and traditional. Based on simple techniques, it’s the variety of local produce that distinguishes the dishes: mountain herbs and greens, bulbs, unique cheeses, fresh fish, the famous Cretan oil, and raki a bracing grape brandy.
The Cretan Diet is famous throughout the world. The Cretan eating habits were considered as the Mediterranean Diet Model, then the Cretan Diet was inscribed in 2012 by Unesco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Aptera is one of the most significant city-states of Crete. The site is located on a plateau of an altitude of 200m above Souda Bay, about 15 km away from the city of Chania on the road towards Rethymno and just 20 minutes drive from our hotel.
The most important monuments of the site are:
- The Roman cisterns
- Bipartite temple, known as the "bipartite sanctuary", dated to the 5th-4th century BC
- Graves of the Geometric-Roman periods
- The fortification walls, preserved to a length of almost 4 kilometres. The main phase of construction belongs to the 4th century BC.
- The Roman bouleuterion
- The Late Byzantine monastery of Hagios Ioannes Theologos (St. John the Baptist)
- The Turkish fortress built in 1866-1869.
