A story of hope. 💚🌴

In 2010, the Palm Forest of Preveli was devastated by a massive wildfire. Many feared it would take decades to recover.
But nature had other plans.
The Cretan date palms proved to be incredibly resilient. Against all expectations, they grew back, turning blackened trunks into a thriving green forest once again.

Last week, fire struck Preveli for a second time. 🔥🌴
The area closest to the beach suffered the worst damage. Seeing those burned palms was heartbreaking.
Yet, only one week later, something extraordinary is already happening.
Tiny green spears are emerging from the very palms that looked completely destroyed. 🙏

A quiet reminder that life is stronger than fire. That hope can rise from the ashes. That every new shoot is a promise of tomorrow.

De voorbije dagen waren bijzonder moeilijk voor onze gemeenschap. Onze gedachten gaan uit naar de families van de brandweerlieden die het leven lieten, naar iedereen die gewond raakte en naar de mensen die hun huis, hun dieren of hun bron van inkomen verloren.

Diep respect en oprechte dank aan alle brandweerlieden, vrijwilligers en inwoners die zich dag en nacht hebben ingezet om de branden te bestrijden.

Velen zetten hun eigen leven op het spel en gebruikten hun eigen voertuigen en materiaal om mensen, huizen en de prachtige natuur van Zuid-Kreta te beschermen.

Jullie moed, inzet en solidariteit verdienen het grootste respect. Bedankt, uit de grond van ons hart. ❤️

Tegelijk willen we graag enkele misverstanden rechtzetten die de afgelopen dagen op sociale media zijn verspreid. Nee, heel Kreta staat niet in brand en Plakias is veilig. Dankzij de onvermoeibare inzet van brandweerlieden, vrijwilligers en vele lokale inwoners is de situatie onder controle.

Het verlies van een deel van het prachtige palmbos van Preveli is hartverscheurend. De natuur zal tijd nodig hebben om te herstellen, maar Plakias blijft de plek die zovelen kennen en liefhebben. De azuurblauwe zee, de prachtige stranden, de gastvrije taverna's en de indrukwekkende natuur zijn er nog steeds en verwelkomen bezoekers met open armen.

Heb je een vakantie naar Plakias gepland? Dan is er geen reden om die te annuleren. Integendeel: met je bezoek steun je de lokale bevolking en de vele kleine ondernemers die een bijzonder moeilijke periode hebben doorgemaakt.

We kijken ernaar uit om je binnenkort bij ons te mogen verwelkomen. 💙

Καλό μήνα! ❤️ (wishing you a nice month)

The past few days have been incredibly difficult for our community. Our thoughts are with the families of the firefighters who lost their lives, everyone who was injured, and those who lost their homes, animals or livelihoods.

Deep respect and heartfelt gratitude to all the firefighters, volunteers, and local people who stood together to fight these fires.

Many risked their own lives and used their own vehicles and equipment to protect their neighbours, homes, and the beautiful nature of South Crete.

You are true heroes. Thank you. ❤️

At the same time, we'd like to clear up some misunderstandings that have been spreading online. Crete is not burning as a whole, and Plakias is safe. Thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters, volunteers and local residents, the situation is under control.

The damage to part of the beautiful Preveli Palm Forest is deeply saddening, and nature will need time to recover. But Plakias remains the place so many people know and love. The crystal-clear sea, beautiful beaches, welcoming tavernas and stunning landscapes are all here, ready to welcome visitors.

If you're planning to visit, there is no reason to cancel your holiday. In fact, your visit helps support the local people and businesses who have been through an incredibly difficult time.

The sky turned red over Crete on April 1st… and no, it wasn’t a filter or a 1st of April fool.
A Sahara dust storm covered the island, transforming the light completely.
Here’s what actually happens:
Sunlight normally looks white, but it’s made up of all colors.
When Sahara dust fills the air, it scatters and blocks the shorter blue wavelengths…leaving the longer red and orange tones to dominate the sky.
So that deep red glow?
It’s not the sky changing…
it’s what your eyes are left with.

Every corner you see is something we’ve designed, built ourselves, chosen, doubted, changed … and believed in anyway.
Not perfect (yet).
But very real. And very close.

Finally… the first plants 🌱
21 m³ of soil.
Turned and mixed 4 times.
Up and down the stairs hundreds of times with approx. 3000 buckets.
Brutal work.
Days of being completely exhausted.
Body sore, arms dead.
But today…
the first plants went in the ground. 🌿

Not the most photogenic part of building a boutique hotel but one of the most important ones.
We moved 15 m³ of soil to prepare our plant beds, shaping the ground before the first plants go in.
This is the kind of work you don’t always see, but it’s what makes everything that comes after possible.

Next step: planting 🌱

Yesterday evening, we were treated with an unusually generous sky.

Winter sunsets in Plakias have their own magic, and yesterday was one of those evenings that offered a little more than usual.

No two days here are ever the same.
