It’s almost the weekend and for some of us that means celebrating with a drink or two! Is beer your drink of choice? We’ve been looking at posters of drinks this week to celebrate the festive season and today we finish with 'Bières de la Meuse' (1897).
One of Mucha's most famous posters, this piece was commissioned to promote the historic breweries of the Meuse River Valley. So famous in fact, that Adolphe Willette (1857-1926) created a caricature entitled ‘Pious Error’ (1898) which depicted a village girl kneeling on the road praying to this poster believing it to be the image of the Madonna.
Willette’s caricature illustrated the mystical power of Mucha’s poster as well as its far-reaching impact with the dissemination of commercial culture.
