Did you know that one of Thasos’ most fascinating ancient industrial sites is hiding right next to one of the island’s most beautiful beaches?

Today, Aliki is known for its twin bays, clear turquoise waters and seaside tavernas. But the narrow peninsula between the two beaches is also an open-air archaeological site, home to the Ancient Marble Quarry.

For centuries, marble was cut here right by the water’s edge, making transport by sea easier and turning this small peninsula into a place of real commercial importance. Thassian marble was prized across the ancient world and was used in major monuments, including the Kasta Tomb at Amphipolis.

Because parts of the quarry are now underwater, you can swim or snorkel above traces of this ancient landscape, with marble blocks and cut rock still visible below the surface.
