One of our top recommendations of things to do in Santorini: a visit to Vassaltis Vineyards and Robert McCabe’s exhibition Lively Matter.
On show until 30 October, McCabe's black and white photographs of a bygone era poignantly capture change and continuity on the island. The breezy greenness of the vineyards and the airiness of the building create an atmosphere of serenity that is very different to the dramatic energy of the Caldera. Arrive before peak visiting times, ideally salty after your early morning swim, to enjoy a couple of chapters from your book with a glass of chilled assyrtiko and a light lunch. Return to The Vasilicos for the time-honoured siesta.

Humble churches like this stand quietly above the sea, carved into the rock, often in the most inaccessible places, here on the very top of a steep cliff, there on a tiny rock in the middle of the sea. Shaped by faith, challenged by time, protected by tradition, "xoklissia" dot the landscape all over Greece, a reminder of all that came before and the shoulders on which we stand. #δεκαπενταγουστος
