Things just got a little better! Turtle Bay is now under new management and a new name. Still the same great location, but is now Eagle Ray Bay Resort!

New Review!

This is paradise for those with the right expectations. This is NOT a luxury resort for relaxing on the beach with all the modern amenities. It is a very affordable get away to wind down, separate from the internet, and spend every day exploring the best snorkeling and diving in the area. Details:

Booking:
Michael was super fast at responding to questions and gives great deals if you're willing to commit money upfront,

Getting there:
This is the hardest part. You really have to take a car to the port, a 7:00 ferry (comfortable) to La Ceiba. Then wait around, and get the small boat to Cayos Cochinos. It can definitely be a bumpy ride (1 hour) and the whole process of getting there from Roatan can take up to 5 hours. Also, there was bad weather, so we couldn't go the day we were supposed to. But Michael and Roger were proactive at communicating. We spent an extra day on Roatan, and Turtle Bay refunded me one nights stay. No penalty.

Rooms:
This is an island with the only access via boat, so don't expect many luxuries. The bathrooms are a bit old, hot water wasn't working when we were there (but it's kind of hot anyways) and do expect bugs. But the staff was good at cleaning every day and providing plenty of water. The rooms can be a walk from the dock, but they are quite large, quiet, and close to the water. Plus it's much better to hang out on the dock (there are hammocks).

Activities:
AWESOME snorkeling steps from our room. We went 3-4 times a day (even at night) for an hour at a time. There are also great dive masters that go out in the mornings for 2 dives. Quality of dive masters, equipment, and safety were great. We were the only ones diving, so we'd get 1-2 dive masters for just the two of us. It is WAY more convenient than normal dive trips as the boat ride is only 5 minutes to the best dive spots. But to be honest, you really don't have to dive because the snorkeling is so good. The lighthouse hike has an amazing view at the end. Visiting the garafuna village isn't too exciting (unless there's an event happening, which we didn't luck out on) and it's more pleasant to hang out around the turtle bay dock.

Food:
Was served at 8 (then you go diving), 1, and 6 and was surprisingly good and had a lot of variety. Not just fish and rice. They do a great job of adjusting to your preferences (I eat pretty much no carbs). There's wifi in the cafe/bar area, but you really don't need it do you?

Overall:
Great for a 3-5 day getaway. Just be ready for the long transfer there and some rustic island living and some of the best snorkeling in the world!

New Review!

Possibly the coolest place in the world. Went there with my wife and 2 kids (5 and 7) and had an incredible time. Our kids love the water, so they were happy as can be. You need to be a little adventurous... it's an island in the Caribbean Sea, so yeah. Bring bug spray, sun screen, and realize the boat ride can be impacted by the weather (again, Caribbean Sea). Food was incredible, and everyone was super friendly. We spent as much time as possible snorkeling and hiking around the island, but when the weather was bad one day, they even let us borrow their external hard drive with a ton of kids movies on it. Thank you Stephanie, Josh, and Tara!

Our Story

What was once Turtle Bay Eco Resort is now Eagle Ray Bay Resort. While the resort did change hands late in 2019, the resort never closed and all guests reservations were honored.

The new management team, Roger and Tin, are not new to the area, and expanded the resort as soon as they took over. New renovations and upgrades are on-going, and the team looks forward to providing a world class eco-friendly establishment for many years to come!
