No camera yesterday, dang. Local fisherman stopped by yesterday and let me use his throw net. I was able to catch a ton of sardines, right off our dock. He also was catching some young barricuda. Billy used the sardines and fished off the dock for the barricuda and caught one that was just over two feet (four feet in Cushing Lake language) but we did not eat it. You have to be pretty careful with them, they have a long pointy mouth with tons of teeth and can be quite aggressive. They also have to be cleaned a certain way or you can get quite sick from them. The locals apparently will take a piece of the meat and put it on or near an ant hill, if the ants avoid it you are not suppose to eat the fish if the ants eat the meat the fish is apparently good to eat. In my mind this is just way to risky for me so I will stick to lobster, shrimp and conch. It has something to do with the fish living inside the reef and not being on the outside. In the meantime, I do not mind fishing for them they put up a bit of a fight, something like a bass. At first we kept seeing these fish that I was calling the skipping stone fish as they would skip across the water like a skipping stone. It was not until we caught one that I was aware that it was the barricuda fishing for the sardines, pretty neat. By the way sardines are really stinky even when they are still alive and fresh from the sea

well thanks to my fruit/vegie guy for this new breakfast receipe. Cabbage with scrambled eggs and tomatoes. NOT as tasty as blueberries and scrambled eggs but at least looks better. Was really tasty, even BW enjoyed it. He tries to give me all different types of receipe cooking ideas I think so I will buy all different type of fruits and vegies off of him. I still can not be convinced to buy the papaya, not really enjoying that fruit

well what do you know a picture of a lionfish, however I can not take credit for it, borrowed it off of google

Today is all about fish stories, NO PHOTOS cause I have a lousy camera. Anyway we were sitting outside after dinner, it is pitch black out here by five thirty and in the sea we were seeing what looks like fireflies. It was really cool, I actually thought it was my eye playing tricks on me until BW mention the lights and I said it must be a reflection from the stars, however it was not, There are 8 bioluminescent species in the marine life here that shine at night, Really cool. I will try to capture them with my phone because the go pro I bought sucks. We have lionfish, they are apparently quite rampant and are NOT native to Roatan they actually believe they were introduced during hurricane Andrew in 1992 in Biscayne Bay Florida and they flourish here because of the warm waters (who would'nt). The problem with these fish is that they are dangerous to eat and poisionous if you touch one. They have passed out spears to the locals and with a special license they are allowed to kill them in an attempt to help control them. The problem with the lionfish is they reproduce quite rapidly and they are destroying alot of the regional fish. They are beautiful in the water and if I can i will try to get a picture of one for you all. I am not swimming, cause of the eye but I am not afraid of sticking my camera and hand in to take a few photos

Okay, now the almond situation, these are a few of the almonds that I stripped of their outer coating (just like a coconut), the fruit of the almond goes black, which is the sign that it is mature and ready to harvest. This is also why everyone including the dog try to eat the black almonds cause they are fruit that has fermented, probably alot like the cashew plant. In any event. I took about half an hour to peel these almonds of their black rotting fruit outer coating and came across another hard, walnut type shell, again just like a coconut. Did not quite know what to do, they said just to use the machete to cut it open. OMG I would have lost five fingers for sure. I tried a variety of knives and a few channel locks and pliers but nothing would open that walnut. Richard suggested I try the hammer, which I did and ended up, after another half an hour with fourteen squashed almonds and one and a half almonds. Now the almonds, again is like the coconut and is soft and not hard like we have when we go to Metro. So I left my stash on the dock and Googled it. Apparently you have to wait until you hear the almond rattle inside the shell, so I tried open them too early, even though they were black. so the rest are back out on the beach getting dry. Google also suggested that you have to put them in the freezer for two weeks to get rid of any tiny larve and or other bugs that may be creeping in there. Apparently natural almonds are known to cause salmanella posioning if not done right. SO........I am leaving the almonds for a few more days, if they do not rattle like they are suppose to then i will continue to pay for them prepared for me. I am going to have John show me how to do them when he shows me the coconut oil again. I just don't want to be chasing my tail spending all this time on them. On the good side of things we are starting to harvest our coconuts, we drink our coconut water/milk every morning. I still don't think Billy knows quite what it is better known for, guess he does not remember all the coconut milk drink results

ok, here goes my craziness AGAIN, comes from family, right David Dronsfield? Anyway, can you figure out what these are? They come off of our trees on the property, we have tons of them and I mean tons of them. They fall every day and every time the wind blows they fall, you actually here them hit the ground some time. And they hurt if they fall on you. If you are not quick every creature on the island, including Alonzo, our neighbour picks them off the ground and eats them. If you are not quick the crabs and ants start eating away at them and I think the lizards, however, I have never seen a lizard actually eat one.

They are almonds. They are yellow, red and green when they fall. You lay them in the sun and wait until they turn black, this is after three days. I did not want to fight the ants and crabs so i made a type of cradle on one of our chairs and placed them in the sun. I will check on them today, it has been about five days. If they are black you can then open them up and either roast them or eat them raw. I am told different things that they are extremely difficult to open and then the other person said just to take a knife and slice it open around the edges. Billy does not think I should use a knife he wants to make sure I have all ten fingers at the end of the day. In any event, I will post more photos once I go check on them.

Also when I say I have lots of almonds, I do mean tons of almonds. I must pick up 3 gallon bucket of these every day or every second day. Not all are useable at least in my mind. But I cam going to try to harvest as many as possible if this first batch turns out. Who knows maybe if I have success I can try making coconut oil again

Hot and muggy here today, we had a great rainbow over the coral reef at about 6 am this morning while BW was doing his normal daily thing of beating my ass in crazy eights. Had some strong winds last night which cooled everything down for a good nights sleep. Will post some photos of the new boat I want to buy later today. Sure hope they turn out, maybe I will include them in part of the rental package.
