COFFEE CULTURE IN CROATIA
(from the point of view from an expat)
I come from a culture where we are raised in a way of thinking coffee was a way to connect. Having a coffee together was the perfect way for women to catch up.
However … coming to Croatia I was amazed on how much culture existed round 3 things: coffee, wind and houses. But today I wanna share on how the Croatian see coffee (from the view of a non-Croatian)
Though I noticed the coffeebars before we moved here I never really understood how much social and businesslife is rooted in coffee. The sale of the real estate we bought we arranged in a coffeebar and celebrated in one every time.

So here are some random facts about Croatian coffee culture.
- The Croatian are coffeesnobs. You might think the Italian are, but no: the Croatian are, hence coffee is very good here
- Starbucks is not in Croatia because they can’t compete with the Croatian coffeebars
- The Croatian keep it classic, no cinnamon moka whipped frappucino but Americano, espresso, macchiato & cappuccino
- It’s perfectly normal for people of the same house to just go out and drink coffee
- Having coffee is the solution for everything
- It’s perfectly okay to take a small snack to nibble while having coffee
- Coffeebars generally have some kind of entertainment for kids. Some pretty cool others a bit scruffy but kids are always welcome
- Coffeebars are always busy
- Both men and women love to go out for a coffee
- The Croatian love to just sit and have a long conversation over a small cup of coffee
If you are in Croatia for summer visiting a coffeebar is probably the most Croatian thing you can do. I prefer mornings, sitting there observing people (actually a very UN croatian thing to do).
