U početku je to bila luka mjesta iz unutrašnjosti otoka Hvara da bi jenjavanjem Turske najezde mjesto postalo naselje s urbanim konturama kakve danas srećemo šetajuci mjestom. Marije iz petnaestog stoljeća, utvrđenu u šesnaestom stoljeću koja je služila mještanima kao sklonište od turskih gusara.
