🥰 One off...
From the sky, Baljenac Island appears like a massive human fingerprint etched into the Adriatic Sea. Located near the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, this tiny 0.14 km² island is lined with over 23 kilometers of hand-built dry stone walls. These intricate barriers were constructed by local farmers centuries ago to delineate agricultural plots—mainly vineyards and olive groves—on an otherwise rocky, sunbaked terrain.
Despite its lifeless appearance today, Baljenac tells a story of endurance and human adaptation. The maze-like patterns were shaped using no mortar—just interlocking stones placed by hand, a technique recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The island is uninhabited now, but its unique aerial view continues to fascinate tourists, archaeologists, and satellite image enthusiasts alike.
